Nathan Fillion to play Green Lantern in Superman: Legacy

As James Gunn and Peter Safran continue to prepare for the beginning of their DC Universe with a fresh interconnected franchise for Warner Bros., Superman: Legacy is going to be their official first movie in the new era of DC. It was revealed a few days ago that actor Nathan Fillion would be playing Green Lantern in the upcoming movie which is being led by David Corenswet.

The Firefly actor will be portraying Green Lantern known as Guy Garnder in the movie who, compared to Hal Jordan and John Stewart, is a less heroic version of Green Lantern but for Superman: Legacy is expected to bring in a little bit of awkward comedy for the audience. The actor had previously starred in Gunn’s Suicide Squad as T.D.K, but now the DC Universe allows the actor to come back as a different character.

Along with Fillion, Isabela Merced has been finalized to play Hawkgirl, where Edi Gathegi is locked in to be Mister Terrific on-screen. The director-writer confirmed the news of the actors being cast for the roles on his social media.

James Gunn on picking Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern for Superman: Legacy

Since the announcement of Fillion portraying a Green Lantern known as Guy Gardner was made online, fans have wondered why Gunn picked this Green Lantern for his upcoming movie.

Gunn replied to a fan’s curiosity about Bluesky who had asked the director about what made him land on Guy Garnder of all the Lanterns. The fans also mentioned that he is not upset with the casting of Fillion, but he was just curious to know Gunn’s mindset. The director replied by saying, “I really love the character from JLI especially, but he also fits the story I’m telling with Legacy.”  He also clarified that Fillion will play Gardner in all parts of the DCU.

James Gunn also expressed his excitement about helming the movie and shared, “Superman: Legacy opens two years from today. It may seem far away to many of you, but it’s close to me! We have a lot to do between now and then. But I haven’t been more excited about a project in forever… and this cast, slowly coming together… holy cow…” He also revealed that Jimmy Olsen will be a part of the new movie and assured the fans that the actors he has been casting for the movie will transcend into other DCU projects.

What do we know about Superman: Legacy?

Without revealing too much about the plot of the movie, Gunn confirmed that Superman: Legacy is not going to be anything like the previous Superman movies. Superman: Legacy is going to recount the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent.

When Gunn was asked online about his decision to include various superheroes in the movie, he responded by explaining, “Superman is a man of two worlds: Clark with Lois, Jimmy, and Perry – and Superman with his meta-human compatriots. How could I tell a full story about Clark/Superman without including all areas of his life?”

It was later reported that the movie is still going to be told from Superman/Clark Kent’s point of view, which means that even if there are various superheroes involved, it’s still a Superman-dominated movie.

Superman: Legacy is expected to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
