James Gunn Shows Frustration With Laziness in Superhero Movies After Ezra Miller’s ‘The Flash’ Fails Miserably at Box Office
With being appointed as the new co-CEO of DC Studios, also comes the huge responsibility for James Gunn of leading the cinematic universe. James Gunn and Peter Safran have already announced their massive plans of releasing two movies and two TV shows each year within the DC universe to avoid overcrowding or rush towards the end. With the new slate for DCU, Gunn and his team appear intent on doing their part to bring quality superhero projects to the big and small screen.
DC Boss Unimpressed With The Recent Superhero Movies
One of the biggest voices in the world of superhero movies, DC Studios co-CEO, James Gunn has great plans in motion to revamp the DCU and is hard at work developing his Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters slate for the DCU. Recently on the Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum podcast, Gunn drew critical attention to both the quantity and quality of the multiple superhero movies released in the last couple of years.
Rosenbaum mentioned how there were barely any superhero movies when he played Lex Luthor in Smallville on the Warner Bros TV Network and The CW. Gunn replied to the statement by saying that currently there are too many of them.
Talking about how Gunn intends to handle this issue, he clarified that, “We’re not going to overextend ourselves at DC.” He then called out the creators commenting on how the focus has solely shifted to making sequels rather than attempting to make the first film a special one.
Gunn said,
“But I think that what’s happened is, people have gotten really lazy with their superhero stories. And they have gotten to the place where, ‘Oh, it’s a superhero, let’s make a movie about it.’ And they make, ‘Oh, let’s make a sequel, because the first one did pretty well,’ and they aren’t thinking about, ‘Why is this story special? What makes this story stand apart from other stories? What is the story at the heart of it all? Why is this character important? What makes this story different that it fills a need for people in theaters to go see? Or on television?'”
The DC Universe Movie The Flash Crashes Hard At The Box Office
Though the box office greenbacks collected by any given movie are not just the only valid mark of its long-term place in the cinematic pantheon, it won’t be a crime to say that The Flash’s box office struggles are a mess of DC’s own making.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, the Andy Muschietti-directed superhero epic did even worse than 2009’s Watchmen while according to Variety’s inside sources, the film’s performance has been described as an “unmitigated disaster.” There is more bad news pouring in for Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios when The Flash crawled to $175 million in worldwide receipts Thursday, after falling to third place on box office charts behind Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Elemental.
There are just not enough excuses for explaining such an appalling opening for the film. With this, The Flash is now the seventh DCEU movie in a row that will fail to gross more than $500 million, and will probably be the seventh in a row to fail to top $400 million. There is barely a single film from the last DC decade that will truly stand the test of time.
