The Infinity Stones have played an important role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the Space, Mind, Reality, Power, Time, and Soul Stones featuring prominently in the storyline.
The supervillain, Thanos’ mission to collect them all and wield the power of the Infinity Gauntlet was central to the plot of the Infinity Saga. Surprisingly, it took just 90 minutes for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 director James Gunn to create the backstory for these powerful stones.
During a recent interview with Phase Zero, Gunn revealed that he didn’t put much thought into creating the backstory for each stone.
“I wrote that scene in about an hour and a half, it just like came up with what the Infinity Stones were… and everything’s [the entire MCU’s] based on that…laughing with actor Chris Pratt.”
Further, the screenwriter shared the fact about making the Infinity Stone,
“They were like, ‘You know, we’re thinking about putting the Power Stone in.’ I was like, ‘That’s cool. The Power Stone. The Collector has the Power Stone….’ And I just made up this bullsh*t.”
The scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol:1 where The Collector explains the history of the Infinity Stones was written quickly and served as the foundation for the entire MCU.
Interestingly, after the 56-year-old disclosed that he created the entire backstory in just 90 minutes, fans took to social media to share mixed reactions. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. marks the end of Gunn’s trilogy, and though the movie is doing good business, it was unable to dethrone The Super Mario Bros. movie in its opening weekend.

Further, some fans felt disrespected and disappointed that there wasn’t more thought put into it.
It came out kind of disrespectful. The lore was already there so he didn't have to think hard on how to do it, besides, he's a script writer and a director. He makes shit up for a living. It's the way he worded this that's rubbing me the wrong way
