Why Does Jay Leno Want Control Over His Wife’s Assets?
Jay and Mavis Leno have been married for forty-three years. They have had a strong and happy marriage. Mavis Leno defended her husband around his second tenure on The Tonight Show when he replaced Conan O’Brien.
Jay Leno too, has been supportive of his wife’s endeavors. Mavis Leno has been a board member of the Feminist Majority Foundation; a non-profit that works toward women’s rights. Leno chaired the foundation’s campaign for female education in Afghanistan. Jay Leno had donated $100,000 to the cause.
It is certainly strange that Leno would file a conservatorship over his wife. Especially, when they have had a healthy married life. However, the reason that a conservatorship became his cause of action is valid.
Mavis Leno has been diagnosed with dementia. The doctors have said that she is not in a state to manage her assets or process information to make an intelligent opinion. This has caused her husband to file a petition in Los Angeles County Superior Court to have control over his wife’s assets.
What Does Jay Leno’s Conservatorship Appeal Mean?
As has been reported by Entertainment Tonight, it is unclear when Mavis Leno’s diagnosis of dementia happened. Per the court documents, Leno has requested control over his wife’s assets as he “wishes to create a trust to hold each of his and Mavis Leno’s one-half interest in their community property, in order to ensure Mavis Leno has managed assets sufficient to provide for her care” should he die before her. The fund will also provide for Mavis Leno’s brother.
The petition further states:
“Mavis has been progressively losing capacity and orientation to space and time for several years [and that] Jay is fully capable of continuing support for Mavis’ physical and financial needs, as he has throughout their marriage, [but her] current condition renders her incapable of executing the estate plan.”
The doctor’s statements have claimed Mavis Leno to not in a state to make decisions. A hearing of this case has been scheduled for April 9.
