“It’s going to be a call about you retiring.”: Jennifer Garner Revealed her Agent Gave Her an Ultimatum About Retiring If She Didn’t Take the Role in ‘Dallas Buyers Club’
In remembrance of her past choices, Jennifer Garner revealed that her old agent Patrick Whitesell had given her an ultimatum about retiring if she didn’t accept the role in Dallas Buyers Club. When it came to playing Dr. Eve Saks in the popular drama that starred Matthew McConaughey in his Oscar-winning performance, the 48-year-old actress was debating turning down the part. Garner’s performance in Dallas Buyers Club turned out to be a critical success, and Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto also won Oscars for their performances.
Jennifer Garner Shared Untold Story About Her Past
The endearing actress Jennifer Garner has confessed that Matthew McConaughey persuaded her not to leave her critically praised part in Dallas Buyers Club.
She revealed during an interview on Tell Me More with Kelly Corrigan: “He said this is going to be a call about one of two things: It’s going to be a call about you doing this little movie, or it’s going to be a call about you retiring.”
She wasn’t ready to give up her career quite yet: “I also knew that I didn’t want to be done acting, so I said, “OK, I’ll do it.”
She also disclosed that at the time, she and her then-husband Ben Affleck had recently welcomed their third child, and she only agreed to take the job under duress from her agency since she had taken “so much time” away from acting to devote herself to her family.
But given that Garner was still nursing, the film’s hectic production schedule was challenging for her.
“My b**bs were freaking out,” she said. “It was bedtime and we were doing some scene that was supposed to be light and I started crying and I was like: ‘I have to quit. I have to go home and be with my kids. I just can’t do this anymore.‘”
But Garner continued: “Sweet Matthew McConaughey pulled me aside and said: ‘What is going on with you?‘”
Garner added that McConaughey requested a break from the team following their conversation so that she could pump in private.
She added: “How much do I love that guy? I know, a lot.”
In 2009’s Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, McConaughey co-starred with Garner, and he later won an Oscar for his depiction of Ron Woodroof, a real-life AIDS patient and campaigner, in Dallas Buyers Club.

On the Pearl Harbor set in 2000, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner became friends. On the set of Daredevil, where they played love interests Elektra Natchios and Matt Murdock, Affleck, and Garner reconnected in 2002. Affleck stated to Playboy in 2017: “We met on Pearl Harbor, which people despise, but we fell in love on Daredevil.” Between 2005 and 2018, Garner and Affleck were married, and they currently share parenting of their three kids, Violet (age 17), Seraphina (age 14), and Samuel (age 11).
Affleck said that he and Garner split up because they “grew apart” in a 2021 interview on The Howard Stern Show. “The truth was, we took our time, we made a decision, we grew apart. We had a marriage that did not work. This happens,” he said. “It is somebody I love and respect, but to whom I should not be married any longer.”
He continued, “And then we said, ‘You know what? We tried. We tried because we had kids.’ And then both of us felt like, ‘We don’t want this to be the model that our kids see of marriage.’”
When it came time to call it quits, Affleck said he and Garner “did it amicably,” but he added that they have had “moments of tension” since their breakup.
Garner is currently dating businessman John Miller, who she has been with since 2018. Affleck is married to Jennifer Lopez, who he also dated and was previously engaged to before his marriage to Garner.
