Jennifer’s Body Writer Was Forced Put Margot Robbie’s Barbie on Hold for 14 Years: “They wanted a girl-boss feminist twist on Barbie”
In the Hollywood industry where everything is filled with twists and turns, Greta Grewig’s highly anticipated Barbie movie also has its own back story. Right from a Stanely Kubrick inspire teaser trailer to the grappling feminist girl boss twist, the journey to bring the new and modern Barbie onto the sliver screen has been nothing short of a surprise, and long waits
Barbie: 14 years in the making
The box office killer Barbier took 14 years of studio changes, rewrites, and recasting to be what is today. After more than 40 animated films having their main characters as the iconic doll ‘Barbie,’ the making of a movie with real-life stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling has been finally released in the theaters but only after a long wait of 14 years.
It all started back in 2009 when Mattel first came up with the idea of making the real-life ‘Barbie’ movie along with Universal Pictures and producer Laurence Mark. Although the movie was not released at that time because, in 2014, the film was taken up by Sony who further hired Jenny Bicks to write down the screenplay.
Despite of this change, there was no success as the movie was still under multiple rewriters by different people like Diablo Cody, Lindsey Beer, Bert V, Royal, and Hillary Witson. Talking about the same Cody told GQ magazine, “I didn’t really have the freedom then to write something that was faithful to the iconography; they wanted a girl-boss feminist twist on Barbie, and I couldn’t figure it out because that’s not what Barbie is.”
A next creative overhaul was seen in the project when the rights were transferred to Warner Bros Pictures in 2018. Before the project was transferred to WB actors like Amy Schumer and Anne Hathway were tied with the project. Although after Warner Bros came into the picture Robbie was brought in to and so was Gerwig and Baumbach to write the final script.
The Real-life Barbie Margot Robbie thought it will never happen
Considering the 14 years long history that the movie was taking to come into being, even Margot Robbie never trusted to it come on the big screen. As per the reports under the Warner Bros creation, no one was aware of what Grewig and Baubach’s script was until it was completed. However, after reading it for the first time, Robbie recalls how she turned towards Tom Ackerley and said, “This is so genius. It is such a shame that we’re never going to be able to make this movie.” It was a too-good-to-be-true moment.

Robbie went ahead in the interview and said “I think it’s that Greta kind of pushes it in directions that I didn’t think they would let us go in.” She even said that she was worried about how people will react to the framing of Mattel and their CEO as the villain.
Despite all the long waits and doubts that everyone had in the entire project everything in the end worked out. The movie which was released in the theaters on 21st July is being loved by everyone and is doing its magic at the box office.
