Karl Urban has been a geek film and television staple for two decades now, having played the lead role in Dredd, Leonard McCoy in Star Trek, Skurge the Executioner in Thor: Ragnarok, and more, it’s safe to say that Urban can play a wide variety of roles.
While he has seen a lot of success over the years, Urban’s breakout role came in 2002’s The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers saw incredible success all around the world. The movie was very well received by fans and critics alike and is widely considered to be one of the greatest sequels in cinema history.
The movie certainly meant a lot to Karl Urban as well as it brought him in front of a wider audience. Speaking about the movie during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Urban drowned in nostalgia while showcasing his helmet from the sets of the movie. He said:
“This is my helmet from The Lord of the Rings and it’s pretty amazing I have to say. You know, it’s an absolute work of art made by Richard Taylor and the guys. The attention to detail is extraordinary, it means there are details on here that you might not necessarily register in the film.”‘
Karl Urban recalls getting cast for The Lord of the Rings
The story of Karl Urban getting the role in The Lord of the Rings is nothing short of amusing. During his early days, Urban did a film called The Price of Milk which was directed by Harry Sinclair. Interestingly, Sinclair was a good friend of Peter Jackson who was directing The Lord of the Rings. While recalling how he met Jackson, the New Zealand actor had this to say (Via Slash Film):
“I did a bunch of New Zealand films. One of them was a little film called The Price of Milk, which was directed by Harry Sinclair. Harry was a good friend of Peter Jackson, so he took a rough cut down to show Peter. And I just happened to be in Peter’s face when he was looking for someone to cast as Éomer in The Lord of the Rings.”
This certainly sounds like one of those casting tales made in heaven. If not for Karl Urban as Éomer, it’s hard to imagine anyone else playing the role.
