Kate Hudson is the daughter of the talented actress Goldie Hawn and actor Bill Hudson. However, she did not get the chance to grow up with her father as her parents divorced when she was only eighteen months old. Later, Hawn raised her children, older son Oliver Hudson and his sister Kade Hudson with her longtime boyfriend Kurt Russell who is also an actor.

Although Kurt Russell is not her biological father, Kate Hudson has always been appreciative of his love, support, and guidance. Hudson formed a strong bond with her stepfather and would often watch the movies he starred in. This, however, turned out to be too much to handle for her when she had to watch Russell drown in the movie Poseidon.

Kate Hudson Couldn’t Watch Kurt Russell’s Drowning Scene in Poseidon

The actor disaster film Poseidon, directed by Wolfgang Petersen, was released in 2006. The movie was based on Paul Gallico’s 1969 adventure novel The Poseidon Adventure and also a lax remake of the eponymous movie that was released in 1972. The film starred Kate Hudson’s stepfather Kurt Russell as one of the survivors looking for a way to save himself.

Kate Hudson is no stranger to the profession of acting as she has starred in some of the best movies herself. In fact, she almost won an Academy Award for her performance in Cameron Crowe’s musical drama Almost Famous, which was released in 2000. Even so, she had a hard time watching her father drown in a scene in Poseidon.

According to Contact Music, the How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days star was reluctant to join Kurt Russell for the premiere of Poseidon. She once said:

“I had a really hard time watching the drowning scene. That said, that’s one of the best drowning scenes I’ve ever seen. I was shocked. I remember when I saw Backdraft for the first time; I was just a mess and then I had dreams after that forever. It brings you way too close to the mortality of your parents.”

Hudson is obviously very attached to her stepfather and loves him dearly so watching him do such scenes has to be hard for her. However, that does not stop her from supporting Russell.

Kurt Russell Agreed to Do Poseidon without Reading the Script

Kurt Russell has been in show business since the age of 12 so it has been over six decades since he made his acting debut. This also made him a good guide to his stepdaughter Kate Hudson. For someone as experienced and talented as him, not reading the script before arriving on the set to shoot a movie does not seem to be much of an issue.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Tango & Cash actor revealed how he did not bother to read the script of Poseidon before signing himself up to do it. He said:

“Back before I signed on to Vanilla Sky with Tom Cruise and Cameron Crowe, my agent and I were talking on the phone, and I said, ‘Yeah, I want to work with those guys. And he said, ‘Well, do you want to read the script first?’ And I said, ‘No, I don’t care if it’s one line or a hundred lines, if they kill seven people or what. It doesn’t make any difference. I want to work with those people, I think they’d be fun to work with.’ And I felt a little bit that way about Wolfgang.”

Russell then went on to state how his agent did his best to charge as much money as possible for the actor to star in the movie. Although the movie did not land well with critics, it earned a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
