Lately, there hasn’t been much news about the film. Moreover, recent comments by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige have made fans worry about what will happen to the project.

The Blade reboot has hit many obstacles since it was first announced. The project has gone through several directors, with Bassam Tariq leaving in 2022. Yann Demange joined the project, but he has also left it this year. Another issue is the ongoing script development for the film, which has seen multiple rewrites with no permanent writer. Stacy Osei-Kuffour was first hired to write it in February 2021.

After Tariq left, Michael Starrbury took over for revisions. Nic Pizzolatto joined in April 2023 to make further changes. Michael Green came on board in October 2023 for another rewrite, and now Eric Pearson is expected to give the script yet another overhaul. This is unusual compared to the quick development Marvel movies usually go through.

Kevin Feige spoke with BlackTree TV to promote the upcoming release of Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine. The Marvel boss’ recent comments about the film highlight that quality is more important than speed. He stressed the importance of “not rushing it and making sure we are making the right Blade movie.”

Although it’s great that the studio is focusing on making a strong script. But the long time it’s taking has led to rumors that Mahershala Ali (who is set to play Blade) might drop out of the project (per Super Hero Hype).

Deadpool & Wolverine Could Influence Blade Reboot

The upcoming release of Deadpool & Wolverine is a big change for Marvel Studios. It’s their first movie with an R rating, similar to the edgy style of the original Blade trilogy with Wesley Snipes. Kevin Feige admits that Deadpool & Wolverine might influence how they approach Blade. He continued in the same interview:

Because there were some great Blade movies years ago — they were all rated-R. So I think that’s, like Deadpool, inherent with the character of Blade.

If Deadpool & Wolverine does well, it could lead to a more mature and intense Blade film, easing worries about the reboot’s creative direction as well. However, this shift could be risky. While a hit might guide Blade, it could also invite comparisons between the two movies.

Deadpool & Wolverine is set to release on July 26, 2024, and Blade on November 7, 2025!
