Kit Harington, who originally wanted to be a journalist, switched his career when he landed the role of Albert in the National Theatre’s adaptation of the play War Horse. His second play was Posh, a dark comedy about upper-society men attending Oxford University. His next stop? Television. Game of Thrones, to be more specific.

At this point, there is hardly anyone who likes to watch TV shows and hasn’t heard of Game of Thrones. It goes without saying that Kit Harington’s character Jon Snow is an integral part of the show. The actor gained international recognition, thanks to this role. However, it was not always a bed of roses for him. He has recently opened up about what pushed his mental health over the edge.

Kit Harington on How Game of Thrones Harmed His Mental Health

Game of Thrones, adapted from George R. R. Martin’s novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, is one of the most famous shows to date even though its final season premiered in 2019. The show made a lot of actors popular and Kit Harington was no exception.

Fame can be a very hard thing to deal with, especially since the huge social media attention that it brings. While there are numerous people in the entertainment industry who have dealt just fine with unparalleled fame, there are also some who succumbed to this very thing.

Unfortunately, Kit Harington fell into the latter category. Recently, he opened up to the Hidden 20% podcast host Ben Branson about it:

“My darkest period was when the show seemed to become so much about Jon when he died and came back. I didn’t like the focus of the whole show coming onto Jon. When you become the cliffhanger of a TV show and a TV show probably at the height of its power, the focus on you is f—–g terrifying. I realized that my life was hinging on this.”

Harington is absolutely right about being the sole focus of a TV show that is so popular. Thankfully, he chose to do the right thing at the right time by checking himself into a rehab facility and withdrawing from public attention.

This is not the first time Kit Harington has spoken about his struggles while working on Game of Thrones. Being a part of the ensemble cast was part of the problem, but Jon Snow’s resurrection was a much bigger problem because it quite literally made him the spokesman for the show.

After all the suffering that he went through, no one would complain if Harington were to say that he is not going to return as Jon Snow. However, that is not the case as he is working on a spin-off show Snow that would be a sequel to Game of Thrones.

The show has been officially announced by author George R. R. Martin but hasn’t been green-lit by HBO. The scripts are still in development yet Kit Harington is hoping to see the show get to production. Unless this show happens, the chances of him returning as Jon Snow are almost zero.
