The first Joker was a hit. It grossed over $1 billion (as per Box Office Mojo) and secured 11 Oscar nominations. Now, it seems that the sequel really wants to portray something unexpected, as it is no longer just a crime drama. Joker: Folie à Deux returns Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime with the new addition of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.

The movie’s plot takes place two years after the first movie. Gaga portrays Joker’s love interest, Harleen “Lee” Quinzel. Recently, she attended the premiere in Los Angeles, where one particular query by Variety sparked everyone’s curiosity: Would Gaga ever think of doing a full-on superhero film?

In response, Gaga played coy and just shrugged. Or maybe there is more to it. It just fueled the fire of speculation. Netizens quickly speculated on two different ideas. Some felt that Gaga was not interested in being part of the fast-growing superhero film industry, while others felt she might already have a deal.

Some fans even feel that she might appear along with Batman in the future. In this context, Gaga had an interesting vision. In an interview on Jake’s Takes, she said that if her character met Robert Pattinson’s Batman, she would “set him on fire.”

However, Gaga is not playing tough with her character. She said to Good Morning America (via Billboard) that having the opportunity to portray Lee let her tap into a part of her personality she had never shown before, which made the character so much more interesting for her as well as for the audience hopefully.

As Gaga’s performance as Harley Quinn is already exciting her fans, her earlier interview with Variety gave some insights about her decision if she were given a chance to do a superhero film. Gaga is only willing to take one if it aligns with her values.

I might, yeah. It’s really hard for me to say that I wouldn’t do something. I think mostly I’m not interested in doing things that don’t ultimately have something meaningful to say.

Moreover, she is not the only one who is skeptical about the superhero genre. There are many filmmakers who have criticized Marvel and DC movies. But the genre is still a money-maker. Kevin Feige, the President of Marvel Studios, revealed his feelings in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the superhero genre deserves more respect from the Academy.

However, rumors regarding Gaga collaborating with Marvel have been going around since 2020 concerning her potential casting in the capacity of Emma Frost in an X-Men reboot. Whether she will transition to a full-fledged superhero role is uncertain, but it can be said that her choice will have a purpose.

Joker: Folie à Deux will be internationally released on October 2, 2024, and domestically on October 4, 2024.
