All 8 Upcoming DC Animated Shows Under James Gunn, Ranked by Release Order

Since James Gunn took the reins of DC Studios and kickstarted the DCU, he has made sure to continue DC’s legacy in the animation space. The franchise was officially kickstarted with Creature Commandos, which perfectly set the tone for the outcast team-up stories that Gunn seems to be building towards.

As the live-action films and shows slowly begin to expand, Gunn has made sure both the main DCU continuity and the Elseworlds universe have animated offerings. The studio recently announced more shows in development at Annecy, including an adaptation of Absolute Batman. Here are all the upcoming animated shows from Gunn’s DCU.

1. Blue Beetle Continues the Story the DCEU Started

Blue Beetle was one of those unlucky films that was ignored by most fans because it released during the closing moments of the DCEU. Despite positive reviews, the movie was not a financial success, but James Gunn confirmed that the story will continue in the DCU. An animated series was announced in 2024, with Xolo Maridueña reprising the role.

The series was set to pick up from the DCEU film, with potential for Maridueña to reprise his role in a DCU film. Though no official release date has been announced, Maridueña revealed that the studio was aiming for a release in 2026 (via Bleeding Cool). So, Blue Beetle will be the first release in the list.

2. Mister Miracle Will Be a Great Addition for the DCU’s Gods and Monsters Chapter

The New Gods storyline is one of the more interesting ones in the DC roster, and while the DCEU had some plans for it, James Gunn will finally bring it home with Mister Miracle. The adult animated series will reportedly be exploring Scott Free, the galaxy’s greatest escape artist and one of the New Gods.

Tom King, the writer of the comic book series, was set to write all episodes of the show and will also be the showrunner (via Bleeding Cool). While production was said to be underway in 2025, there has been no clear date on when the show will release. Fresh artwork was shown at Annecy this year. The show could be released at the end of the year or in early 2027.

3. Creature Commandos Season 2 Welcomes Back an Underrated Team

James Gunn’s DCU started with Creature Commandos. The ragtag black ops team assembled by Amanda Waller after her actions in Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad banned her from using humans set the tone for what Gunn set out to do with the DCU. They put the ‘Monsters’ in the ‘Gods and Monsters’ chapter of the franchise.

While season 1 was written in its entirety by Gunn, season 2 reportedly has a writer’s room and will take place after the events of Peacemaker season 2. Again, no exact release date is announced, but it might be out soon since it was greenlit quite some time ago and has already proven itself with a brilliant first season.

4. My Adventures with Green Lantern Kicks Off an Elseworlds Story

A spin-off of the well-received My Adventures with Superman, this Elseworlds series centers on Jessica Cruz, reimagined as a high schooler in Coast City who’s chosen by a fallen Power Ring. Reported castmates include Nikki Jones, Alex DeWitt, and Kilowog, with Kyle Rayner positioned as a potential love interest, and Auli’i Cravalho voicing the lead.

Interestingly, the show frames the Green Lanterns as peacekeeping warrior monks, a notably different take from the “space cop” framing used in the live-action Lanterns series. Casting and production news only recently surfaced, and since flagship series My Adventures with Superman Season 3 itself took nearly two years to air after recording began, this spin-off likely won’t premiere before 2027.

5. Starfire! Builds on the Hero We Saw in Teen Titans

Among the family-friendly Elseworlds shows that the DCU has greenlit, Starfire! is one of the most exciting. The show gives the Teen Titans mainstay her own origin story and will see her uncover the deepest reaches of the DC universe when an ancient spaceship lands on her planet. Gunn confirmed that it would be set separately from the main DCU continuity.

Details on cast, showrunner, and tone remain sparse compared to the studio’s higher-profile adult animated efforts, and no release window has been set, placing it further out on the horizon than the projects above.

6. DC Super Powers Brings Kids to the DCU

Another Elseworld story sees an adaptation of the popular toyline Super Powers. The DC Super Powers show was announced along with other Elseworld shows that will reportedly be aimed at younger audiences. The show will follow popular heroes like Lightning, Flash, and more at the Alliance School of Heroes under Principal Martian Manhunter.

There has been no confirmed date for its release, and it will likely be out in early 2027.

7. Scott Snyder’s Seminal Absolute Batman Gets An Animated Adaptation

The one comic book storyline that everyone wants to see on screen now is Absolute Batman. Scott Snyder’s seminal take on the Caped Crusader in a Darkseid-ruled world is all kinds of epic and brutal. It puts Batman as a working-class hero in Gotham, while the Joker is a millionaire. It has been nominated for multiple Eisner Awards.

Warner Bros. Animation president Sam Register confirmed the full-CG series is in “very early stages of development,” with no network, cast, or timeline attached yet. Given how fresh the announcement is relative to every other project here.

8. Everyone’s Favorite DCU Character, Krypto, Gets His Own Series

Announced alongside Absolute Batman at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation’s June 2026 Annecy showcase, this kid-focused series is separate from the Krypto Saves the Day! shorts and gives Superman’s dog his own proper show.

SpongeBob and Jellystone veteran C.H. Greenblatt executive produces a story that follows Krypto tagging along with a gang of misfit criminal wannabes from down the block, whose poorly laid schemes slowly get redeemed by the dog’s chaotic good nature. The project is still in early development. No cast, network, or release date has been set.
