“Let me sum up why people hate Anne Hathaway”: Howard Stern Didn’t Hold Back on Why Fans Despise The Dark Knight Rises Star
Anne Hathaway is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and talented actresses of her generation. Since her breakthrough in the 2001 Disney movie The Princess Diaries in which she played the lead role of a princess Mia Thermopolis, the actress has charmed millions of people with each new performance. Over the years, she has won numerous accolades including an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, and a Golden Globe Award.
However, Anne Hathaway’s life as a celebrity has not always been the cakewalk that some might assume it to be. Like any other professional, she has had her own set of struggles. Despite being one of the most modest and sweetest actresses, she managed to become one of the most unlikable ones at one point in time, and TV personality Howard Stern had his opinions about it as usual.
Howard Stern’s Opinion On Why Fans Despised Anne Hathaway
The tarnishing of Anne Hathaway‘s public image did not result from a single incident or one particular factor. Instead, it was an amalgamation of certain things that led to the mass hatred directed towards The Dark Knight Rises actress.
In 2011, Hathaway hosted the Oscars alongside James Franco and some of it went awfully wrong. In typical patriarchal fashion, most of the blame was put on The Devil Wears Prada star. This was probably the incident that played a huge role in ruining the actress’ image.
In 2013, Howard Stern brought up the incident while interviewing James Franco on the Sirius XM radio show (via Yahoo). Stern unpromptedly expressed his dislike for the actress while addressing why people despised her, saying:
“Let me sum up why people hate Anne Hathaway; first all she gets a speechwriter to write her speech. She’s overly dramatic at these award shows. She’s always out of breath. She’s even acting when she’s winning an award.”
In addition to getting harshly criticized for her hosting gig at the Oscars, Anne Hathaway was also deemed unlikable for sending back food and her boyfriend being a con man even though there is no means to prove that she knew about his crimes.
Anne Hathaway Had A Hard Time Due To The Hate She Received
When Anne Hathaway was preparing for the Golden Globes Awards ceremony in 2013, she was already beyond exhausted from being on a press junket that only cared about her shaved head and weight loss for the portrayal of Fantine in Les Misérables when the actual focus should have been on the character itself and the issue it represented.
This led to the actress’ Golden Globes Award acceptance speech being presentational but not for the reasons people thought it to be. The following day, she saw an article on the internet that suggested that people hated her. Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar about her feelings about it, she said: “Punched in the gut. Shocked and slapped and embarrassed. Even now I can feel the shame.”
The gaggle of Hathahaters had field days post the dress gate at the Oscars which complicated things more for Anne Hathaway as no one was willing to cast her despite her Oscar win. Luckily, Christopher Nolan casting her in his movie Interstellar broke the cycle.
