Lily Gladstone Battling Natalie Portman, Carey Mulligan for Best Actress in Satellite Awards 2024
Although actress Lily Gladstone made her debut with the French drama Jimmy P: Psychotherapy of a Plains Indian, she did not have her breakthrough until 2016 when she appeared in Kelly Reichardt’s movie Certain Women. The role earned her numerous accolades including the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress and even a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female.
Lily Gladstone’s most recent achievements have come from her incredibly realistic performance in Martin Scorsese’s Killer of the Flower Moon, which stars Academy Award-winning actor Leonard DiCaprio. It has been recently announced that Gladstone is up against some of the best actresses in Hollywood for the Best Actress Award at the Satellite Awards 2024.

Lily Gladstone is Nominated for the Best Actress Award at the Satellite Awards 2024
Lily Gladstone plays the lead role of Mollie Burkhart, wife of the gullible World War I veteran Ernest Burkhart, in Killer of the Flower Moon. The movie, set in Oklahoma in the 1920s, centers on the murders of Osage members and the relations between them following the discovery of oil in their tribal land.
So far, Gladstone has already been nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and has the Best Actress award for the New York Film Critics Choice Awards. Recently, she has been nominated for the Best Actress Award at the Satellite Awards 2024.
The Winter in the Blood Actress is up against Natalie Portman and Carey Mulligan for the Satellite Award for Best Actress. While Portman has been nominated for her performance in Todd Haynes’ dark comedy May December, Carey Mulligan has been nominated for her work in Bradley Cooper’s biographical drama film Maestro. Other nominees for this award are Greta Lee (Past Lives), Penélope Cruz (Ferrari), and Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall).
Maestro focuses on the relationship between composer Leonard Bernstein (Bradley Cooper) and his wife, Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). On the other hand, May December is loosely inspired by the American sex offender Mary Kay Letourneau and sees an actress named Elizabeth Berry meet Gracie Atherton-Yoo, who infamously started dating her now-husband Joe when he was 13 years old, to prepare for a movie role.
Lily Gladstone on What Helped Her With the Role of Mollie Burkhart
Mollie Burkhart is a very strong character in Killers of the Flower Moon. Although she does not speak much, she conveys her message clearly. When asked what helped her prepare for the role of Mollie apart from David Grann’s book, Lily Gladstone said (via The Wrap):
“To a degree, I felt like I knew who Mollie was. Grann drew her really well in a way that felt familiar. She was born in 1886, and my great-grandmother Lily, who I was named after, was born in 1896. Mollie was described as being a very devout Catholic, but also a very traditional Osage woman. Same with my great grandma. She wanted to be a nun before she ended up getting married off when she was 16 and having 10 kids. Devout Catholic her whole life.”
For this very reason, Gladstone and Martin Scorsese had a long discussion about the impact of Catholicism in the 1920s and even now, to a certain point.
