When Tom Hanks Used His Forrest Gump Experience For Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan
Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan was based on a war background. To master the act, the entire cast of Saving Private Ryan was sent to a boot camp. The actors went through a very tough time during their learning period at the army boot camp and some were even on the verge of leaving the project. All thanks to the legendary actor Tom Hanks, Saving Private Ryan saw the light of the day. He not only helped the entire cast to understand the importance of the boot camp training but also used his Forrest Gump experience.
During an interview with Take2MarkTV, in 1998 Tom Hanks spoke about the movie and even mentioned the boot camp experience. He said-
“I knew what it was like to be in boot camp because I had done it with Dale Dye on Forrest Gump… It was the moment where I had to say; ‘look, you guys, we can’t do this. We can’t break off into two sections – the guys who went through boot camp, and the guys who didn’t. We have to stay together on this.”
Fortunately, Tom Hanks’ association with Saving Private Ryan helped Steven Spielberg complete the movie along with all the actors on board. Made on a budget of a budget of $60-$70 million, the movie went on to collect a staggering amount of $482. 3 million at the box office.
Matt Damon On The Rigorous Training He Had To Go Through For Saving Private Ryan
Matt Damon played the titular character in Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan. The movie revolves around a group of soldiers led by Captain John Miller, who are on a mission to locate Private James Francis Ryan after he lost his three brothers in the war.
During an interview with the media outlet Entertainment Weekly, Matt Damon spoke about the torturous boot camp experience. He revealed that the actors were asked to run every night, and they had to survive on a ration. They used to spend hours cleaning and loading the weapons. He confessed-
“They started to harbor that kernel of resentment, ’cause I wasn’t there. These guys are lying facedown in the mud, and I’m, you know, in a bubble bath in America. When I showed up on set, a lot of that resentment just translated right onto the screen.”
Matt Damon even mentioned that Tom Hanks’ association with the project was no less than a blessing in disguise as he helped the entire crew understand the main purpose behind the army boot camp.
