It is well known that Dwayne Johnson is a doting parent. He is currently wed to Lauren Hashian, the daughter of Boston musician Sib Hashian. The pair has two daughters. The actor and his ex-wife Dany Garcia, with whom he announced his split after ten years of marriage, also had a daughter together. Let’s ascertain the cause of their breakup.
Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia separated after a decade of being together
Dwayne Johnson met his now ex-wife, American film producer, IFBB professional bodybuilder, and businesswoman Dany Garcia in the early 1990s and they got married in 1997. The duo welcomed their daughter Simone in 2001 and 2007 the couple announced that they were heading for a divorce, which was finalized in 2008.
According to the reports by The Things, the couple realized after six years that the nature of their relationship was evolving and they decided to terminate their romantic involvement. However, the duo have remained good friends post-divorce, with Dany Garcia still managing Johnson’s business affairs.
During an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2020 during her Vision Tour, Dwayne Johnson for the first time addressed his separation from Garcia and said,
“It was just one of those things where it wasn’t an ugly divorce. It was just… marriage wasn’t in our cards. Great friends. Marriage wasn’t in our cards, but we both had an appetite for business and to accomplish things. And we thought, well, what if we continued to do business together?”
The same sentiment was shared by the actor when Piers Morgan asked him how he managed to stay friendly with his ex-wife, to which he replied via The Things;
“We realized that we weren’t meeting the expectations of [our] marriage… And I was very fortunate that I had [Dany] who had the wherewithal to say, ‘OK, we’re gonna go through this and it’s terrible, but somewhere on the other side of this, we’re going to become better.'”
A lot of people are surprised at how effortlessly the two of them have managed to make their business relationship work, but it definitely took some work.
Dwayne Johnson admits to not understanding his experiences of marriage
During his interview with Piers Morgan, the Black Adam actor admitted to making a lot of mistakes and not being sure of what he wanted from his marriage back then. He said via Sports Manor,
“I had made a lot of mistakes and I didn’t have the ability or the wherewithal or I think the capacity to stop for a moment and say, ‘God, I’m really screwing up. Let me just stop for a moment. Let’s talk about this.’ So I can’t tell you what it was then. I can tell you today that I value a relationship. When I love you, I can really love you, whether it’s my ex-wife, or my girlfriend, or my little girl…”
Dwayne and Dany co-own several huge business projects currently, along with Seven Bucks Productions, which has produced some of the best films of Johnson’s career, including Baywatch, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Black Adam, Red Notice, Hobbs and Shaw.
Dwayne Johnson’s ex-wife says divorcing him was the best thing she could do
In an interview with Marie Claire in 2017 the IFBB professional bodybuilder shared that divorcing Dwayne Johnson was the best thing she could do for their relationship. She said,
“Some people go through separation and there’s no conversation, and it’s a dark time, and one person goes off, but that was never us. We went on this journey together. We were going to change the way of our relationship together. We spoke every day, and multiple times a day—not only on business, but about what was happening personally.”
The actor’s former wife noted during the interview that they were very conscious of the fact that they had drifted away from each other and fell for other people and there was the potential for extreme emotional experience. She said,
“We gave ourselves room to know that there may be emotional freak-outs as new people come into our lives. We were like, ‘Okay, we’re human, so we’re going to work through that.'”
Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia enjoy working together and they have respectively moved on in their personal lives as well, with Johnson being married to Lauren Hashian and Garcia being married to fitness trainer and fellow bodybuilder Dave Rienzi.
