Scorsese, who crossed paths with Robert De Niro during their early days in the industry, expressed that his collaborations with De Niro were much different and better than those of the actors he felt. While speaking to r GQ magazine, Scorsese recalled his experience with De Niro, emphasizing the profound love and confidence they have developed over the years.
“There is something about De Niro who understands the humanity of all kinds of people and could really express that we have similar interests. He knew where I came from, and I knew where he came from. We were also drawn to the same characters. He knew people that I grew up with. We first met when I was 16 years old”.
Scorsese says he had an ideal collaborative approach from De Niro, as he never forces ideas but encourages experimentation. “He did ask that you try them, and if you didn’t like them, you’d say, “I don’t like them. Let’s move on. ”
Scorsese also highlights when other actors are more particular about how they are filmed; in contrast, De Niro’s approach is characterized by trust and a sense of partnership.
“He goes, Hey, listen if that shot plays nest on my back and on somebody else’s face. “Whereas other actors need eye light, they need to look a certain way. It’s all about trust and love”.
“That’s what it is, and that’s a big deal because very often if an actor has a lot of power at that time, the studio is angry with you. The actor comes in and takes it over. With him, I never felt that.”
Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese first collaborated on Mean Streets in 1973 and following their successful partnership, which has endured for more than 64 years, have produced around 10 features, including, Taxi Driver, New York, Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, Casino, The Irishman and with their latest piece of art, Killers of the Flower Moon, which landed in theaters on October 20.

The Departed director also told Deadline about De Niro, that he has been fortunate in his long-lasting partnership. “We’ve been very lucky over the years, and it turned out people change over 20 or 30 years”.
