“Marvel got dumb lucky”: Hugh Jackman’s Audition Clip as Wolverine Could Give Robert Downey Jr. a Run for His Money, Proves He Was Always Meant to Be The X-Man
- Hugh Jackman wasn't the first choice to play Wolverine.
- The actor's audition tape however proves that he was always meant to play the character on-screen.
- Screenwriter raised concerns with Hugh Jackman's good looks and being the nicest guy that were opposite to what they needed for the character.
Actor Hugh Jackman is regarded as one of the most influential people in the world who is not only admired by the fans for his performances but also respected by his peers and aspiring actors for his work ethic. The actor who is widely known for his portrayal of Wolverine returned to play the character after seven years in Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine alongside Ryan Reynolds.
Fans were thrilled to watch their favorite character back on screen after many years. The movie’s success goes on to showcase that Hugh Jackman has still got what it takes to be Wolverine even though he said goodbye to his character in 2017’s Logan. Now, Jackman’s audition tape for Wolverine has resurfaced on the Internet once again, proving why there hasn’t been any other Wolverine.
Hugh Jackman wasn’t the first choice but was indeed the best to play Wolverine
Australian actor Hugh Jackman impressed the audience when he appeared as Logan (code name: Wolverine) in X-Men movies from 2000 to 2020. Surprisingly, the role was written for actor Russell Crowe, who had suggested director Bryan Singer to give Jackman a chance. Hugh Jackman, in his interview with Triple M 104.9FM, shared (via Digital Spy),
Bryan Singer asked Rusty [Crowe] to do Wolverine, and he said, ‘Nah mate, I’ve just done Gladiator; it’s not for me, but you should look at this guy.’
Now, Jackman’s audition tape from back in the day has resurfaced on the Internet, and fans have a reason to believe that the actor was always meant to play the part. The actor acts like Wolverine and reenacts a scene with an individual who is not visible in the video but whose voice is heard. Jackman’s audition impressed the fans who mentioned,
Marvel got dumb lucky to find Hugh Jackman. He IS Wolverine.
Although a couple of fans expressed that Wolverine should have been a little short and had a lot of hair, there is no denying that over the years Jackman made the role his own. A fan had gone ahead and argued that they haven’t seen any other actor play Wolverine in live-action, adding that Tom Hardy can be a good choice, but it’s Jackman who is the best since he’s the only live-action actor.
They also noted that it’s very similar to how Robert Downey Jr. is the best Iron Man because he’s the only Iron Man. Some even argued that Jackman could give Downey Jr. a good run for his money as Iron Man. Dougray Scott was also one of the actors who had been in the run to play Wolverine, but because he was needed for Mission: Impossible 2 a little longer than the studios expected, along with him being in a motorcycle accident and dropping 150 pounds, it didn’t work out, and Hugh Jackman got his spotlight to shine.
X-Men’s screenwriter mentions Hugh Jackman’s real strength came from the humanity of Wolverine
The actor appeared as a guest on Who’s Talking To Chris Wallace when he shared that before he started working as Wolverine on-screen, the head of production raised one concern about the character’s appearance. Wolverine in comics is shorter than Jackman’s real height. The actor shared,
I did about seven auditions. I remember finally, I did audition; audition, audition, and then I went to see the head of the production. We were talking, and he said, ‘It’s just one problem. I hope the fans are not going to have a problem because the character’s meant to be 5’5’’’. And I said, ‘Tom it’s going to be absolutely fine. Don’t worry about anything.’
One of the other concerns that screenwriter David Hayter shared during an interview with Inverse was how good-looking Jackman is for the part of Wolverine. He added that the actor was great, but he was the nicest guy in the world, noting that he was very tall and handsome, which did not make them believe that he was Wolverine. The screenwriter mentioned,
I think one thing Hugh captured with Wolverine is his heart. Hugh is such a lovely, caring guy, and that came through in the character. Hugh’s real strength came from the humanity of Wolverine. All that was left was to find the viciousness.
The screenwriter further mentioned that they worked with Jackman to get him to that sort of Clint Eastwood hard-ass edge. He recalled that when he came in for an audition, there was a moment when Jackman turned towards the camera, and he looked like young Eastwood; that’s when they knew that he was the one.
Deadpool & Wolverine is playing in cinemas.
