Marvel Has the Golden Opportunity to Take Hugh Jackman’s Superhero on Another Multiversal Adventure with This Never-Seen-Before Mutant After Deadpool and Wolverine
Hugh Jackman is all set to reprise his role of Wolverine in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, and this has been a treat for the fans. Wolverine is undoubtedly one of the oldest and most recognizable characters in the X-Men franchise. But with the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s a golden opportunity to introduce a new adversary for Logan.
Solem, a relatively new character introduced in the X-Men comics, brings a new twist to the superhumans with adamantium. Unlike Wolverine, who has his adamantium claws inside his body, Solem has an entire outer layer of a micro-fibrous version of chainmail made of adamantium. This makes him a match for Wolverine.
Marvel Can Try Introducing Solem Along With Wolverine
Although both Wolverine and Solem have adamantium, their backstories are rather different. Wolverine has his adamantium fused in his skeleton, which gives him his iconic claws and an element of invincibility. He is an experienced X-Man with an aggressive animalistic attitude and an incredible healing factor
Solem, on the other hand, comes from Arakko, which is a mutant island that was recently introduced to the X-Men comics. He is a combatant and very hot-headed. However, he is not yet known to possess any ability to regenerate.
This creates quite an interesting background for a possible screen rivalry. Wolverine’s adamantium claws slashing against Solem’s adamantine skin in an epic fight will be a dream-like moment for fans. Such opposing characters would also introduce some level of mystery to the movie. Solem is a hothead who lets his emotions drive him. He can be the perfect counter to Wolverine’s undying resolve in a battle.
The introduction of Solem wouldn’t just be an opportunity to share some new kind of mutant power. The link with Arakko allows the expansion of a new branch of the X-Men in the MCU. Arakko could provide depth to new, unexplored mutant experiences and characters, which could lead to further X-Men stories.
The fact that Solem had no prior history in the comics also creates a new opportunity. There is an artistic license for writers to develop him for the big screen and perhaps reconstruct his origin story and purpose in line with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Which Version of Wolverine Will We See in Deadpool & Wolverine?
The Wolverine portrayed by Hugh Jackman in Deadpool & Wolverine may be an alternate version linked to a debatable X-Men film, X-Men: The Last Stand. This Wolverine might be from a reality where he failed to kill Jean Grey when she turned into the Dark Phoenix, which made her kill millions. This might be the scarred Wolverine, who is left all alone with the guilt of doing nothing.
This twist would link Deadpool & Wolverine to the Fox’s X-Men universe and bring a new variant of Wolverine. It could also redeem X-Men: The Last Stand’s flawed storyline of Phoenix. Another thing that was disappointing in the movie was how quickly her fight was portrayed, and her death was somewhat cliché.
Although Fox later proceeded to retcon the flawed storyline with Days of Future Past, returning to this plot in Deadpool & Wolverine could be a way of introducing Wolverine, since Ryan Reynolds himself accepted not touching the Logan timeline.
Deadpool & Wolverine will be released in theaters on July 26, 2024.
