Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya’s evolution from British television to Hollywood star is being celebrated in style. Born to Ugandan parents, this British actor came into notice with his performance in the teen drama Skins. However, before he was W’Kabi in Marvel’s Black Panther, he got his breakthrough role in Jordan Peele’s Get Out.

His performance gave him the reputation of an actor who is capable of combining social commentary with psychological intensity. According to Variety, his statue will show the famous ‘Sunken Place’ scene from Get Out, which was seen as one of the representations of the movie’s depth towards race and societal manipulation.

The statue in Leicester Square is the result of a poll conducted between 5,000 British film fans. Kaluuya got a fifth of the votes, which was enough to beat other contenders. Deputy chief executive for Heart of London Business Alliance Mark Williams told Variety,

We are excited to welcome Daniel Kaluuya and Jordan Peele’s ‘Get Out’ to our Scenes in the Square line-up as a celebration of a modern cinematic success and homegrown British talent.

Kaluuya’s performance in Get Out is one of the best examples of subtle acting. He portrayed everything from love and care to doubts and plain fear just by his facial expressions and body language. The audience related to his portrayal of the character’s microaggressions and gradually rising anxiety.

The film enjoyed a record-breaking success. It was produced within a budget of about $4.5 million, and the movie grossed more than $255 million at the theaters (via Box Office Mojo). It also helped Kaluuya earn his first Oscar nomination in the Best Actor category.

Get Out boosted Kaluuya into stardom, but perhaps his best performance to date can be seen in Judas and the Black Messiah. In this 2021 biographical drama, Kaluuya plays Fred Hampton, the chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party.

Based on true events, the movie explores Hampton’s betrayal by FBI informant William O’Neal, played by LaKeith Stanfield. Kaluuya does an especially brilliant job as Hampton. He managed to portray Hampton’s public persona as a leader and revolutionary as well as his more intimate moments.

Kaluuya bagged more awards through Judas and the Black Messiah, including the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Critics and the audience loved the way he maintained his energy and conviction, especially during some strong speeches.

One of the best scenes by Kaluuya as Hampton was when he declared, “I am a revolutionary!” The manner and intensity were almost like real Fred Hampton in person.

The role also demanded to gain more weight and also adopt Hampton’s voice. While Get Out brought initial fame, Judas and the Black Messiah showed that Kaluuya could also carry a heavy role and a film.

Get Out and Judas and the Black Messiah are available to stream on Netflix.
