Emma Stone too had her shot at the superhero genre of movies with her securing the leading character role as Spider-Man’s love interest Gwen Stacy in 2012. Her performance in the movie was praiseworthy, and she went on to reprise that role in the sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2. In 2017, Stone was offered the role of Barbara Minerva aka Cheetah in Patty Jenkins’ 2020 DC movie Wonder Woman 1984 starring Gal Gadot in the titular role.

However, in February 2018, a senior Deadline film reporter Justin Kroll revealed that the Poor Things actress had turned down the role. Jenkins then cast Kristen Wiig as Cheetah which was not received all that well by both fans and critics. The movie itself got mixed reviews which resulted in the cancellation of a third Wonder Woman movie. Looking at how things have turned out, Emma Stone seems to have dodged a bullet.

In a post on X in 2022, Wonder Woman‘s director Patty Jenkins clarified that it was not her decision to stop the development of a third installment of the movie. She wrote:

“I never walked away. I was open to considering anything asked of me. It was my understanding there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time. DC is obviously buried in changes they are having to make, so I understand these decisions are difficult right now.”

When Gunn and Safran took over the studio, Shazam! Fury of the GodsThe FlashBlue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom were already in post-production so they did not have any option but to wait until these movies were released. Post the release of these movies, they are going to reboot the DCU.
