Marvel’s Ironheart Gets Dear White People Director, Ryan Coogler As EP
Director Ryan Coogler alongside his production house, Proximity Media, has finally joined the team of Marvel’s Ironheart, a Disney+ series that is set to feature the titular character which will be adjacent to Iron Man. At the moment, the much-anticipated series has started firming up its filmmaking team, hiring Angela Barnes and Sam Bailey as its directors.
Dominique Thorne Will Play The Titular Role
Dominique Thorne has been chosen to topline Ironheart, playing the role of Riri Williams. She’s a teenage inventor who, in the pages of Marvel comics, builds her version of the Iron Man suit inside an MIT dorm.
Williams made her debut in 2016’s Invincible Iron Man No. 7, created by Brian Michael Bendis alongside artist Mike Deodato. While at some point in the Marvel comics, Williams is even seen taking over for Tony Stark as Iron Man; however, in the MCU, Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., had died fighting the Mad Titan Thanos in 2019’s Endgame.
Ironheart Doesn’t Have A Release Date Yet
Lyric Ross and Anthony Ramos have also been cast in Ironheart, which also has Chinaka Hodge, who had previously served as a staff writer on the Snowpiercer series by TNT, as a head writer.
Bailey will be helming the episodes one through three, while Angela Barnes will direct the second half, from episodes four to six.
Ryan Coogler, with his Proximity cohorts Sev Ohanian and Zinzi Coogler, will be serving as executive producers alongside Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Louis D’Esposito, and Zoie Nagelhout. Hodge will also as the exec producer.
Sam Bailey is known for being the co-creator of the Emmy-nominated Brown Girls and is also the creator of the Gotham-nominated You’re So Talented, which made its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. She even served as a director and producer on the last season of Dear White People by Netflix and was a director on the previous season of the series. She is repped by Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment, CAA, and Frankfurt Kurnit.
Proximity Is Reportedly Working On Another Black Panther Spin-off Series
On the other hand, Barnes counts the episodes of Mythic Quest, Blindspotting, One Day at a Time, and the forthcoming season of Atlanta among her various credits. Angela was also the lead brain behind the viral video campaign titled “Get Your Booty to the Poll”. She is repped by M88 and Brant Rose Agency.
Proximity was founded by the Cooglers, Ludwig Göransson, Ohanian, Peter Nicks, and Archie Davis and is also known to work across mediums, from TV and film to podcasts and soundtracks. In the movie spectrum, it has produced Space Jam: A New Legacy and Judas and the Black Messiah. Proximity also has an exclusive overall TV deal with Disney under which it’s currently working on a Black Panther spinoff series that will be set in Wakanda.
