Tom Cruise is quite the megastar and there are no two ways about it. But his reputation has often found itself in the doldrums owing to his belief system. He turns to Scientology as his religion and it has cost him a few things, including his marriage with Katie Holmes who claimed that not wanting to raise her daughter as a Scientologist was one of the major reasons she called it quits with the Top Gun: Maverick star. One of Cruise’s friends, Simon Pegg was recently asked about this side of the legend’s life, but Pegg chose to play it safe and his answer hasn’t gone down particularly well with the internet.

Scientology questions are off the table between Simon Pegg and Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise and Simon Pegg have closely known each other since they worked on the third installment of Mission: Impossible together which was released in 2006. They have remained close friends over the years and are even co-starring again in the next installment of the action thriller, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, set to release in July, making it their fifth time teaming up.

The Shaun of the Dead actor recently did an interview on BBC’s Desert Island Discs radio show, where his dynamics with the Eyes Wide Shut star were deeply explored. Of course one of the questions was about Cruise’s link to Scientology, but the 53-year-old had a clear-cut, safe, and diplomatic answer ready for that. He explained that he never asked the Magnolia star anything related to his “personal beliefs” because “that would be me abusing my privileged access that I get to him.” The internet has dubbed it as a euphemism for Scientology questions being kept off the table for the sake of sycophancy on Pegg’s part.

Simon Pegg claims to share a wholesome relationship with Tom Cruise

Meanwhile, when asked what his relationship is really like with the Vanilla Sky star, Pegg shared,

“My relationship with him is just very simple and amiable. It’s always been a very easy relationship. I think you realize, when you meet the person rather than the thicket of mythology that’s built up around them, it’s a different experience. I mean, he loves [the fame] and he really relishes it, it’s all he knows. It energizes him and spurs him on. I don’t think I would appreciate that particularly. I’d find it very stressful and overwhelming and it would make me want to retreat. I’m happy where I am.”

That sounds like just the right thing to say about your uber-famous co-star.

Twitter has come at Simon Pegg for not standing up to his “friend” Tom Cruise

However, Twitterati has not taken nicely to Pegg’s defense for why he doesn’t question his “friend” about one of the most significant things in his life – his belief system. People on the micro-blogging site even claimed that the Hot Fuzz actor is afraid of standing up to the Jerry Maguire star because he does not want to risk the privilege of being associated with him and the perks it brings.

Only Pegg and Cruise can really know the state of affairs between them but the internet has definitely given its verdict.
