The Thunderbolts*’ lineup raises questions about Marvel’s choices. Fans wonder why the creators opted for lesser-known villains instead of iconic ones. Instead, we get heroes who are like cheap knockoffs of Captain America.

Sure, Yelena and Bucky are crowd favorites, but the rest? Not so much. Many fans feel this approach makes the film feel like a budget version of the Suicide Squad. While the trailer promises fun moments, it’s hard to shake off the sense of disappointment.

Marvel has a treasure trove of villains who could spice things up. Imagine seeing the likes of Abomination, Baron Zemo, or even Bullseye teaming up! But, we get Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster Bob, and John Walker instead. Check out some fan reactions to this:

Honestly, Marvel’s strategy is a bit off. By focusing on most of the new characters, they’re missing out on the classic ones we actually love. Fans want that familiarity because who does not love a good villain? Those layered characters always bring the heat. If Marvel could nail the balance, they’d have a total win on their hands!

Marvel has just dropped the first trailer for Thunderbolts*, which is set to hit theaters next year. In the film, a group of reformed villains must work together on secret missions for the U.S. government. The trailer posted by Marvel Entertainment on YouTube hints at a dark tone, with Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) stating:

Everyone here has done bad things. Shadow ops, robbing government labs, contract kills. … Someone wants us gone.

Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) adds a thought-provoking line about the blurred lines between good and bad:

We’re brought up with this belief that there are good guys, and there are bad guys. But, eventually, you come to realize that there are bad guys, and there are worse guys. And nothing else.

The film is based on Kurt Busiek’s comic series and is directed by Jake Schreier, with Kevin Feige producing. The screenplay is by Eric Pearson, along with Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear co-showrunner Joanna Calo. Executive producers include Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, Jason Tamez, and Scarlett Johansson.

Thunderbolts* is set to be released on May 2, 2025!
