Has Mel Gibson finalized the title of The Passion of the Christ sequel?
Recently, Mel Gibson appeared on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast to promote his upcoming drama, Flight Risk. Joe didn’t let this opportunity go in vain and asked Gibson about the much-awaited sequel to The Passion of the Christ. The actor and filmmaker shared that it’s already in the process and that they have also fixated on a title.
As per the director, the sequel will be named The Resurrection of the Christ. Explaining his plans, Gibson added,
I’m hoping next year sometime. There’s a lot required because it is— I’ll just tell you this, it’s an acid trip. When we wrote it— I’ve never read anything like it. My brother [Donal Gibson] and I and [screenwriter Randall Wallace] all sort of congregated on this, so there’s some good heads put together, but there’s some crazy stuff.
Gibson then disclosed that he still wants Jim Caviezel to reprise his role as Jesus Christ in the sequel even after 20 years. When he was further asked when the movie would go on the floor, the director said,
I don’t have a start date, I just have to begin pre-production and see what happens, and it’s just gonna roll in its own time. It’s taking its own time. I thought it was late. I thought I was taking too long, but it’s probably just right. It’s when it’s supposed to be.
In 2005, The Passion of the Christ was nominated for Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Makeup at the 77th Academy Awards but didn’t win.
