SUMMARY
  • James Gunn won’t move forward with 'The Brave and the Bold' until the script is right.
  • Peter Safran also insisted that no DC project moves forward without a finished script.
  • It is clear that DC Studios is focused on quality over speed, even if it means delays.

So, if you’ve been waiting for updates from the DC Universe, there’s some big news to unpack. James Gunn, the mastermind behind the upcoming DC Universe, has just given a big update—and it’s not all sunshine and rainbows.

You’ve probably heard of The Brave and the Bold, the much-anticipated Batman movie that’s slated to be a part of the new DCU. Well, the film isn’t quite ready yet, and Gunn has some thoughts about why.

For those of us hoping for a shiny new Batman movie with Damian Wayne as Robin, it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit longer. But don’t freak out! There’s a good reason for it.

But The Brave and the Bold isn’t the only project Gunn and his partner Peter Safran are working on. They’ve got plenty of other DC projects lined up, too. While some things are moving faster than expected, other projects are hitting roadblocks.

The Brave and the Bold is supposed to be a big deal. It’s the first Batman movie in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, and it’s supposed to introduce a fresh take on the Dark Knight. This time, we’ll meet Damian Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s son, who’s also Robin.

The movie is supposed to be based on Grant Morrison’s run on the Batman comics, which means we’re in for a fun, but potentially darker, take on Batman’s world. But here’s the catch—Gunn isn’t happy with the script just yet.

While talking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. He was upfront about the situation: the script just isn’t there yet. While some fans are eager to see this quirky superhero make his live-action debut, Gunn made it clear that he won’t move forward with anything until he’s fully satisfied with the script. As the DC boss said:

From the beginning, I’ve made it clear that the one thing that we’re gonna do at DC is, no matter what, we’re going to wait until the screenplays and the teleplays are ready before we shoot them. And I’m not going to shoot anything until I’m happy with it.

Gunn has said over and over that he won’t start filming until everything is in place. He want to get it right, even if it means pushing back the timeline. And honestly, it’s probably better to wait for a good script than to rush into something that won’t be as great as it could be.

Peter Safran Won’t Green Light a Project Until They Have a Finished Script

James Gunn isn’t the only one with a strict approach to the DCU’s future. His business partner, Peter Safran, is also playing it cautious when it comes to getting projects off the ground.

In fact, Safran has made it clear that they will never “put a project into production before the script is right” (per DC Comics). It’s actually a pretty simple rule: No script? No movie. If the script is even slightly off, Safran isn’t going to give the go-ahead for production.

It might seem like a no-brainer, but in the fast-paced world of Hollywood, not everyone follows this rule. Some studios are more focused on getting things done quickly and worry about the details later. Not DC Studios. With Safran and Gunn at the helm, it’s all about quality over speed.

This approach has been one of the main reasons some projects are moving slower than others. While we’ve seen some DC projects getting updates and casting announcements, others are still in the works because they haven’t nailed the script yet. And that’s a good thing!

No one wants another Suicide Squad disaster or a Wonder Woman 1984 situation, right? Safran is making sure the DC Universe takes its time to build strong, well-crafted stories. Safran has also mentioned that they won’t even start casting until the script is locked in.

This approach might be frustrating for fans eager to see Batman or other characters back on the big screen, but it’s actually a good sign.

The Brave and the Bold is scheduled for theatrical release on October 3, 2025!
