“My experiences in relationships have been cursed”: Selena Gomez Hints She “Never Really Felt Equal” in Justin Bieber Relationship, Channeled it into Her Music
Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber were one couple we all thought was endgame, but it wasn’t meant to be after all. The two dated on and off for almost 8 years, starting in 2010 and finally ending things in 2018, the same year that Bieber married Hailey Baldwin, now Bieber.
Gomez has had a really turbulent life and a while ago, she opened up about the emotional abuse that she was put through in her past relationships, not directly alluding to but hinting towards her long-time beau, the Baby singer.
Selena Gomez’s dating timeline
Selena Gomez was a teen star, who won global fame at a really young age. And the same goes for Justin Bieber. So it was only natural for them to catch the media’s attention as two young mega-celebrities involved romantically. But as it is said that all that glitters is not gold, their relationship wasn’t as dreamy as it looked on the surface either. In fact, in Gomez’s own words, her romances have always been particularly “cursed”.
Although her first celebrity romance was not that big of a deal. It was with the Jonas Brothers star, Nick Jonas when both of them were part of Disney Channel in 2008. It was a short affair that lasted a few months. She was then briefly linked to Taylor Lautner in 2009.
The big game started when the Wolves singer started dating Bieber. But the whole affair was toxic and inconsistent, rife with breakups and patch-ups and whatnot. During the breaks in her relationship with Bieber, the Calm Down singer was also involved with celebs like The Weeknd, Charlie Puth, Niall Horan, and Zedd.
Selena Gomez introspected on her “cursed” relationships
Back in 2020, the Only Murders in the Building actress launched her makeup line, Rare Beauty. It was during a promotional interview for her brand with Vogue in June 2021, that the 30-year-old introspected about her past relationships. The Wizards of Waverly Place actress said,
“I think most of my experiences in relationships have been cursed. I’ve been way too young to be exposed to certain things when I was in relationships. I guess I needed to find what was that word for me, because I felt so less than in past relationships, and never really felt equal.”
She further revealed how the whole thing ties up with the name of her makeup brand and the 2020 album of the same name.
“And so [the word ‘rare’] to me – when I first heard it [used in the single Rare] with Nolan [Lambroza], one of the writers, I just said this is what I want to feel about myself. So it wasn’t even necessarily like: ‘Oh, I feel that way, let me sing it.’ It was almost like: ‘Actually, I need to feel that way about myself.’”
That is quite a way to put it, indeed.
Justin Bieber reportedly subjected Selena Gomez to emotional abuse
Gomez was also in an interview with NPR in 2o20, while promoting her album Rare and especially the song, Lose You to Love Me. It was then that she opened up about the “emotional abuse” that she went through while being romantically involved with the Yummy singer. She confessed,
