“My family would say…”: Royal Family Forbade Meghan Markle from Saying One Word in ‘Suit’
It’s truly astonishing how Suits has surged to become one of the most-watched series on both Netflix and Peacock, shattering all previous records for television shows. The American series Suits featuring Meghan Markle which ended back in 2014 topped the Nielson Weekly streaming chart in 2019.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Aaron Korsh, the creator of Suits, delves into various theories that might account for its remarkable popularity. One of these theories revolves around the Meghan Markle effect. During the conversation, Aaron Korsh candidly expresses his frustration with the royal family, who reportedly prohibited Meghan Markle from uttering a specific word.
Suits creator shows irritation as the royal family allegedly forbade Meghan Markle from saying one word
Of all the shows available on the various streaming platforms collectively, Suits has proved its popularity among all of them. The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, achieved stardom through her portrayal of Rachel Jane in Aaron Korsh’s legal drama. However, her relationship buzz with Prince Harry introduced disruptions from the Royal family into her acting career.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Aaron Korsh was questioned about the interference caused by the royal family. The show’s creator opened up that a certain word poppycock in the Suits script had piqued the interest of the royal family. Consequently, they expressed a desire for Meghan Markle’s character not to use the term poppycock.
He said:
“My wife’s family, when they have a topic to discuss that might be sensitive, they use the word, “poppycock.” Let’s say you wanted to do something that you knew your husband didn’t want to do, but you wanted to at least discuss it, and in just discussing it, you wouldn’t hold him to anything he said, you’d be like, “It’s poppycock.”
“So, in the episode, Mike and Rachel [Markle’s character] were going to have a thing, and as a nod to my in-laws, we were going to have her say, “My family would say poppycock.” And the royal family did not want her saying the word. They didn’t want to put the word “poppycock” in her mouth.”
So, we had to change it to “bullshit” instead of “poppycock,”
Although Meghan Markle’s involvement brought the creator much-needed global attention, this alleged intervention by the royal family did not please him a lot. Aaron Korsh remained uncertain about the source responsible for leaking scripts from the movie sets.
Aaron Korsh on Meghan Markle’s relationship reveal
In 2018, Meghan Markle tied the knot with Prince Harry, officially becoming the Duchess of Sussex. Their transition to full-time working members of the royal family took place in 2020, coinciding with their move to California.
During the interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Aaron Korsh was asked whether he had any early hints about the budding relationship with Meghan Markle before it became public knowledge. He responded by stating that he became aware of it at the same time as the rest of the world, though he did mention his initial happiness for the couple.
Oh, I was as excited in some ways as everybody else.
He also touched on the persistent presence of security and related matters.
Yeah! I mean, your initial reaction is, like, “We’re dating a prince!” (Laughs.) But the security and all that stuff, we shot in Toronto and the writer’s room was in L.A., so other people were dealing with that. I will say, and I think Harry put this in the book because I heard people talking about it — [the royal family] weighed in on some stuff.
