Oprah Winfrey Opens About Her Choice of Not Being a Mother
The 69-year-old actress, Oprah Winfrey in a 2013 interview with The Hollywood Reporter opened up about her preference for not being a mother. She was surprised by her best friend, Gayle King who was daydreaming about being a mother in the seventh grade while she was busy thinking about becoming someone like Martin Luther King Jr.
“Gayle [now a mother of two] was the kind of kid who, in seventh grade Home Ec class, was writing down her name and the names of her children.”
However, she never regretted her decision of being childless as she shared,
“If I had kids, my kids would hate me.” She continued, “They would have ended up on the equivalent of the Oprah show talking about me; because something [in my life] would have had to suffer and it would’ve probably been them.”
While she was keen on not being a parent, she is close to her students whom she mentored during her philanthropic work. Even in a 2019 interview, she opened up about not regretting her choice in terms of marriage or having children.
Oprah Winfrey Never Regretted Having Children or Marrying Her Beau, Stedman Graham
The billionaire in a 2019 issue with PEOPLE shared about once accepting motherhood after engaging her longtime partner, Stedman Graham. She shared,
“At one point in Chicago I had bought an additional apartment because I was thinking, ‘Well, if we get married, I’m going to need room for children.’”
Though that never happened however she felt “the depth of responsibility and sacrifice that is actually required to be a mother” while hosting her popular show. She experienced how serious parenting is which could affect their children in many ways if they did not take their jobs seriously.
She added,
“Both he and I now say, ‘If we had married, we would not be together.’ I have not had one regret about that. I also believe that part of the reason why I don’t have regrets is because I got to fulfill it in the way that was best for me
Though she was a mother for quite a short while following a traumatic experience, she is now guiding various young girls and experiencing her maternal feelings through them. Her decision to not have kids is a bold move in a society where women are often questioned about their choices in terms of parenthood and marriage.
