David Fincher Revealed One Movie He Shouldn’t Have Made

Craving a thriller movie? David Fincher‘s films will work best for you. However, the director himself admits one grave mistake he made in The Game. The film features Michael Douglas and Sean Penn in the leading roles as brothers Nicholas and Conrad. This 1997 film earned around $80 million and despite the worldwide reception of his movie, Fincher shared that even his wife advised him not to craft the film.

While speaking with Playboy (Via IndieWire)and promoting his other film, the director also talked about The Game and said:

“…in hindsight, my wife was right. We didn’t figure out the third act, and it was my fault because I thought if you could just keep your foot on the throttle it would be liberating and funny.”

Fincher thought that incorporating intensity throughout his movie would work out, however, it didn’t. The director admitted not recognizing the third act of his movie. He added:

“I know what I like, and one thing I definitely like is not knowing where a movie is going. These days, though, it’s hard to get audiences to give themselves over. They want to see the whole movie in a 90-second trailer.”

Fincher took the responsibility for not being able to recognize the final act of The Game but despite the director’s concerns, the film was filled with thrill and twists.

Despite the film receiving mixed reviews from fans and critics, The Game had numerous elements that made the movie distinct from Fincher’s other thrillers. The movie was a follow-up to the wildly acclaimed Seven, which earned the director critical acclaim. The Game‘s plot revolves around Douglas’ wealth investment banker Nicholas Van Orton, who receives a mysterious present from his estranged brother Conrad. Nicholas got everything he desired with money, excluding one, which is happiness.

The Game received generally positive reviews, and one thing that stands out in Fincher’s project is his excellent filmography. The description of nightmares and parks turning out to be sinister incredibly contributed to the film’s thrill. The bold dialogues like “The game is tailored specifically to each participant. Think of it as a great vacation, except you don’t go to it; it comes to you.” contributed to the intensity of the film.

David Fincher recently released The Killer starring Michael Fassbender, which premiered at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, followed by a limited theatrical release in September. The film is now streaming on Netflix.
