NBA Legend Dennis Rodman Married Playboy Queen Carmen Electra Drunk, Then Used the Most Sorry Excuse for an Annulment
People getting married while being drunk is a more common phenomenon than we thought. A situation similar to Rachel and Ross’s wedding in season 5 of Friends happened in real life. The drunken wedding involved Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra as the duo exchanged vows under the influence in 1998 in Las Vegas.
Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra’s Vegas Wedding
While it is more common for people to drunkenly make a scene at other people’s weddings, it is a little far-fetched to believe a person can make such an important decision in their life while being so out of their senses. In November 1998, NBA sportsman Dennis Rodman and Baywatch actress Carmen Electra crossed paths in Las Vegas.
Soon after, in A Little Chapel of Flowers which specializes in expediting the wedding ceremony, Rodman and Electra exchanged vows and took a marital oath. Both celebrities were drunk out of their senses and nobody knows how they decided to marry each other as suddenly as they did. Rodman filed for an annulment as soon as he gained his wits about him. His attorney Gerald Phillips said in the petition as reported by Chicago SunTimes,
“Rodman had been married — which in this case was one day — and he seeks a nullity of the marriage as a result of the fact that he alleges that on or about the time of the wedding he was not of sound mind. That is to say, he was drunk. It is my understanding that before the ceremony, Dennis had been partying extensively and he just doesn’t feel as though he had all of his faculties about him when all the other things occurred afterwards.”
Rodman and Electra’s romance in 1997-98 sparked numerous rumors and speculations as they were always drowning in alcohol-soaked parties in Las Vegas. While the Chicago Bulls’ key defensive player was focused on winning the sixth championship, their whirlwind romance became the center of media attention.
When Did the Couple Get a Divorce?
Despite filing for annulment merely 9 days later, the couple finally got divorced in April 1999 after Electra filed the papers. Their romance was called destructive as Electra was still dealing with the loss of her mother while Rodman was finding his footing in the sport. They used to get together to party and escape their personal demons.
In the meanwhile, Dwight Manley, Rodman’s agent was convinced Electra was using the sportsman to get rich and the marriage was a sham. He said, “I don’t think you can legally enter into (a marital) agreement if you’re drunk,” Manley said. “It’s my understanding that legal agreements are invalid if one or more of the parties are not within their own control. And I am told that Dennis was so drunk during the ceremony that he could hardly stand or talk.”
However, in an interview with the LA Times in 2020, Electra mentioned that she had no regrets and she enjoyed spending time with Rodman back then. Rodman was quite smitten with Electra as he requested the team to let her ride on the team plane and go for matches together. The couple was seen together almost all the time and the actress loved the attention she got from dating a basketball bad boy.
