Belcalis Marlenis Cephus, professionally known as Cardi B, is one of the most commercially and critically successful rappers. Initially, she gained recognition through videos shared on Vine and Instagram. Then, she became a regular cast member of the VH1 reality TV series Love & Hip Hop: New York, in which she spoke of her musical aspirations. This was followed by the release of two mixtapes in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

Her first studio album Invasion of Privacy was released in 2018. This was the first female rap album nominated in the Album of the Year category at the Grammys in 15 years and made her the first female artist to win the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album as a solo artist.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Cephus claimed that her success encouraged labels to sign new female rappers.

“These labels was not believing in repping new rap artists. People from every single label have f**king told me this s**t in my face. They started signing new female rappers after I got signed.”

The rapper has been signed to Atlantic Records since the beginning of her career as a studio artist. Before her, there were already many female rappers in the industry such as Missy Elliott, Li’l Kim, and Nicki Minaj, so her words were bound to hurt some fans.

Cardi B might have revolutionized the female rap scene with her achievements, but the accomplishments of other female rappers such as Nicki Minaj cannot be overlooked. Here is what the Super Freaky Girl singer’s fans had to say:

Minaj might not have won a Grammy when Cephus came in, but she had proven that female artists could achieve mainstream success and influence in a male-dominated industry. So, fans taking offense seems understandable.

That being said, there has always been a rivalry between the two artists. However, they’ve both made significant contributions to the rap and hip-hop scenes in their own rights.
