Nicolas Cage is “Traumatized” Everytime He Recalls Eating a Live Cockroach
A few actors can go to any length to get that perfect shot or scene and Nicolas Cage is one of them. The Ghost Rider actor went on to do something bizarre and out-of-the-box in his 1989 released movie Vampire Kiss only to regret it later on. Although it was his idea, he did not enjoy doing it in real life.
During the promotion of his movie Renfield, Nicolas Cage spoke about the infamous scene and how he still regrets years after doing it on screen. Nicolas Cage plays the role of a vampire again in the Nicholas Hoult starrer.
Nicolas Cage Recalls Eating Live Cockroaches For The Perfect Scene
During the promotion of the 2023 released horror-comedy drama Renfield, Nicolas Cage was present with his co-star Nicholas Hoult on media outlet Yahoo Entertainment’s talk show. While talking about the movie, the National Treasure actor spoke about his supernatural comedy-drama Vampire Kiss. He was reminded of the infamous scene by his co-star during the interview, who is also an insect eater in the movie. On being asked if Nicolas Cage gave Nicholas Hoult any advice to play the right hand of Dracula, the 59-year-old actor recalled-
“I’ll never do that again–I’m sorry I did it at all. I saw it as a business decision because when people see the cockroach go in my mouth… [they] really react,”
He further revealed that the director played a prank on him, and he was so dedicated to his role that he went on to eat that insect twice. He said-
“I ate [roaches] twice because the director did it as a prank. If you could get rid of your fear, your phobia of eating insects, you could solve world starvation–High protein, no fat, excellent nutrients, abundance. They’re everywhere! But nope — not gonna happen.”
Nicolas Cage simply regrets the scene where he was shown eating a live cockroach. He even advised his co-star not to go to that extreme level with respect to his role only to regret it later.
Nicolas Cage On Playing Dracula In Chris McKay’S Renfield
Nicolas Cage’s Renfield revolves around the relationship between Dracula and his right hand Renfield played by Nicholas Hoult. Chris McKay’s Renfiled is a direct sequel to Tod Browning’s 1931 released Dracula. During an interview with the media outlet Collider, the actor was asked about Renfiled and his experience of playing Dracula after a long time. The Con Air actor said-
Well, first of all, I had never been offered Dracula, and I don’t know how you say no to Dracula, you know? But I do know that it was profoundly important to me that whatever I contribute as Dracula, it has to be on the side of doing something well because Dracula’s character has been done many times in cinema, and it’s been done a few times well, and it’s been done, more often, poorly, and I didn’t want to go in that direction, especially since the house was Universal itself.”
He further continued as-
“So, that led me to believe that, “Okay, let’s look at the ones that have been done well, you know [Frank] Langella, [Christopher] Lee, [Gary] Oldman, [Bela] Lugosi, and let’s see what we can extrude from– use that as a jumping point, and extrude from there.”
According to Nicolas Cage, the character of Dracula has multiple shades and just has an addiction to blood, which is as normal as alcohol, drugs, or s*x. His rage, anger, and frustration come from a place of loneliness and darkness.
Renfield is currently available on Amazon Prime.
