Nicole Kidman Did Not Belong at Oscars, Felt She Was Only There to Support Tom Cruise: “I don’t deserve to be here”
Although Nicole Kidman is an award-winning Hollywood A-lister, there was a time at the start of her career when she was not as successful or recognized for her work. This was also the time when she got married to her ex-husband Tom Cruise who at the time had already achieved much recognition. However, the attention she received from the association did not do much food for her self-esteem in terms of being an actress. The Golden Compass actress opened up about this back in 2008 seven years after her split with Cruise.
Nicole Kidman Felt She Did Not Belong at The Oscars During Her Relationship with Tom Cruise
When Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman had just started making acting together, it was obvious that Cruise already has a well-established Hollywood career. Although the films they did together and their relationship brought Kidman into the spotlight, she had not made her mark as an excellent actress independently.
After their marriage back in 1990, the two of them reunited for their second project Far and Away. But this was seemingly not a very smart step as it only enhanced the focus on her relationship with Cruise rather than setting her as an independent and promising actor. In a past interview, Kidman opened up about her retrospections on working on those projects. According to her the role she debuted in Hollywood which was in the Tom Cruise starrer Days of Thunder, had been one-dimensional.
Also around the time attending Oscar parties with her Hollywood A-list husband made her feel she somehow did not belong there. Opening up with Glamour in 2008, the Moulin Rouge star shared,
“I thought, I don’t deserve to be here. We would go to the Oscars and I would think, ‘I’m here to support him.’”
It was only when she worked on the comedy film To Die For that she finally found her creative needs being met.
A Brief Look At Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s Relationship
Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise met back in 1989 on the sets of 1999 Days of Thunder. It was Kidman’s Hollywood debut although she came into the American spotlight with her Australian thriller film Dead Calm.
The pair got together quickly and tied the knot the following year after they met. They remained married for 11 years until the Top Gun star finally filed for a divorce over “irreconcilable differences”. Moreover, reports suggested that the separation happens because Kidman did not agree to join the church of Scientology.
However, the former couple have been on amicable terms ever since and have moved on with their life. They share two kids named Bella and Connor.
