Shang Chi overtook Marvel’s Black Widow only to become the highest-grossing film during the COVID-19 phase when it was released in September 2021. It was the first film after the start of the pandemic, to gross approximately $200 million domestically. Then came the Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios co-production Spider-Man: No Way Home in the picture. It surpassed Shang Chi’s $432 million globally.

Although, the Shang Chi actor Simu Liu thinks this is unfair. “We had such a great run. Shang-Chi came out, we saved cinema, and we set a Labor Day box office record. And then Spider-Man came along”, laughed Liu and heard applause. ” In my humble opinion, great movie loved it. I grew up watching (Spider-Man movies), and I’ve seen all of them. But in my opinion, (they) deployed a cheat code and brought back nostalgia all the way (from 20 years ago). I would love to have a friendly chat with Spider-Man, I think that would be really fun in the octagon. I get my (ten) rings, though”, teased Liu.

Fans snapped back at Liu’s comments dissing the Spider-Man film. They think that Liu is just jealous of the film and that they have a nostalgic element to be put to attract the audience. Fans do not believe Shang Chi to be any good than Spider-Man, so they agree that the Tom Holland film deserved its growth against Shang-Chi indeed.
