No Way Home: Charlie Cox Initially Thought His Role Was a Joke!
Charlie Cox, who played The Daredevil on Netflix’s series didn’t think that the offer for him to appear in the blockbuster hit No Way Home was a serious one at all.
While appearing in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Daredevil star Charlie Cox revealed that when he initially got the call from Marvel boss Kevin Feige about playing Matt Murdock in the MCU, Cox almost thought that it was a joke. “You never know. It was wild,” Cox said.
“It was a pretty surreal moment, I’m not going to lie,” Cox continued. “Bear in mind that it’s been a few years. And I was pretty convinced it was over. Kevin said, ‘We’ve got some ideas, but I wanted to make sure that you, in principle, are interested.’ And I was like, ‘I’m very interested.’’And then I didn’t hear from anyone for two months. And I got to the point where I wondered if I dreamt it.”
In an earlier interview, Cox went on to recall the exact moment he received the call from Feige, defining it as “incredibly unexpected and out of the blue.” “I got the call mid-way through lockdown, summer of 2020, and I filmed [No Way Home] in March or something of ’21,” he said. “So I had to keep it a secret for almost a year — and then, of course, I didn’t come out [until Dec.], so over a year. So, yeah, it’s been intense.”
Cox returned to play Matt Murdock for a very brief cameo in No Way Home as he appeared in the movie as Peter Parker’s lawyer right after Spider-Man’s secret identity gets exposed to the world, thanks to Mysterio. This happened to be the first time since 2018 that Charlie Cox came on the screen as Matt Murdock after the Netflix series, Daredevil, got canceled just after three seasons. While it wasn’t known if Daredevil would re-appear in another Marvel film/series, Kevin Feige later confirmed before No Way Home that the hero will be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he would be portrayed by Charlie Cox.
While we do not know how Daredevil will appear next in the MCU, Charlie Cox has teased an appearance from Daredevil, saying that he’s “very excited” about his Marvel future. “I think at this point I expect to be involved [in the MCU] in some capacity, otherwise it’d be a bit of a weird one-scene moment,” he said.
While Charlie Cox doesn’t suit up as Daredevil in No Way Home, Tom Holland has revealed that he already has really high hopes that his version of Spidey and Daredevil may team up again in a future Marvel project. “It was really cool to see him snap back into a character that I am really a fan of and that he has a lot of love for, obviously,” Holland said of their scene together. “So it was pretty awesome, and I hope that one day we find a way for Spider-Man and Daredevil to team up again.”
Spider-Man: No Way Home is running in theaters now.
