In a candid interview Lauren Bacall, a renowned actor who worked alongside Marilyn Monroe in the movie How to Marry a Millionaire, disclosed the late actress was a very insecure and dependent person. Bacall, through this interview, painted a picture of Monroe’s inner struggle and also her unique approach toward acting. She revealed Marylin Monroe was completely dependent on her coach Natasha Lytess.

“Marilyn was frightened, insecure–trusted only her coach and was always late. During our scenes she’d look at my forehead instead of my eyes; at the end of a take, look to her coach, standing behind Jean Negulesco, for approval.  If the head shake was no, she’d insist on another take”

According to Bacall, Monroe after every scene used to seek approval from her coach, and if she didn’t approve the actress used to request a retake. This mostly resulted in both the actors stretching on the scene for 15 to 20 takes. Despite of this Lauren Bacall found it very difficult to dislike Monroe.

“A scene often went to 15 or more takes, which meant I’d have to be good in all of them as no one knew which one would be used. Not easy–often irritating. And yet I couldn’t dislike Marilyn. She had no meanness in her–no bitchery. She just had to concentrate on herself and the people who were there only for her.”
