Since Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez hit the theatres, the movie received mixed reactions from critics and the audience. While many appreciated the French-produced crime musical drama, others bashed the film for showing Mexico in a stereotypical storyline. Now, people have marched to social media platforms to bash the film and the Oscars’ decision to nominate the film for so many categories. Despite having an ensemble star cast featuring Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Karla Sofía Gascón, the movie couldn’t make an impact on the critics because of the clumsy storyline, godawful singing sequences (except Gomez), and according to the critics, it’s a movie that insulted the Mexicans and the trans community.

Why is Emilia Pérez getting bashed for leading the nominations at the Oscars with the most nods?

In this award season, Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez has been doing quite great. After winning the Golden Globes, the film earned 13 nominations at the Oscars, including for Best Picture, Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón as the eponymous Emilia), Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña), Best Director, and Best Original Score. The movie is led by three women – Selena Gomez, Saldaña, and Gascón.

The storyline follows Gascón as the notorious drug cartel leader (Manitas) in the first half, who then with the help of the lawyer Rita (Zoe Saldaña), fakes her death, changes her identity, and becomes Emilia. However, in the process, Manitas leaves behind his wife Jessi (Selena Gomez), and two kids. Although the movie is set in Mexico and shows Mexican characters, it was not shot in Mexico rather it was filmed in France. After the release of the movie, people took offense at the way how the trans community has been portrayed.

Now, hatred for Emilia Pérez has kicked up a notch after the Oscars’ nominations list. Netizens have taken X (formerly known as Twitter) by storm and shared their opinion while bashing the Academy and the film. Here’s what they are posting:

Emilia Pérez is now available on Netflix. If you haven’t watched it yet, then it can be streamed.

Is Emilia Pérez as good as Nolan’s Oppenheimer on the Oscars’ list?

Well, the Oscars’ 2024 list featured 12 nods for Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer. The film even won most of the awards in the nominated categories. Now, that Emilia Pérez has received a similar amount of nominations in this year’s Academy Awards, does that mean the movie is as good as Nolan’s flick?

Hollywood showed how much they have been adoring Jacques Audiard’s directorial, even a few A-listers including James Cameron, Michael Mann, Denis Villeneuve, Guillermo del Toro, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Madonna have come out to praise the film. Yet, the film has faced a lot of criticism over the time. So much so that Audiard had to cancel a Q&A session at the Cineteca Nacional de Mexico due to controversies over Mexican representation and trans-identity in his film. After this, the director even issued an apology:

If there are things that seem scandalous to you in Emilia, I apologize. What I would like to say is that I’m not trying to provide answers. Cinema doesn’t provide answers; cinema only poses questions. And perhaps the questions posed in Emilia are incorrect. Maybe I simply found them interesting. I didn’t want to, and I don’t want to be pretentious.

However, Selena Gomez recently reacted to the news of her Pérez family earning Academy Awards nominations. She shared an Instagram story that read, “So incredibly proud of my @emiliaperez family!!” Well, it is definitely a proud moment for the team.
