If you’ve been following Only Murders in the Building, you know that each season is a bumpy journey of laughs, twists, and unexpected turns. Season 4 was no different, bringing our favorite trio—Charles, Oliver, and Mabel—back for another exciting adventure.
They’ve come a long way since their first case, and their chemistry is better than ever. This season had it all: chaotic film productions, surprising guest stars, and even some heartfelt moments.
The main mystery revolved around the shocking murder of Sazz Pataki, a beloved stunt double and close friend. As Charles dealt with the ups and downs of Hollywood, Oliver dealt with his quirky love life, and Mabel stepped up as the savvy detective we all admire.
They faced plenty of red herrings along the way, but they always managed to keep it fun and engaging. Now, as we reach the finale, tensions rise, and secrets unravel. And the main question is: Who really killed Sazz? Trust us, you won’t want to miss this wild conclusion.
Who Killed Sazz Pataki?
This part contains spoilers!
In the Season 4 finale of Only Murders in the Building, titled My Best Friend’s Wedding, it’s revealed that Marshall P. Pope, aka Rex Bailey (Jin Ha), is the one who killed Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch)—and he acted alone.
This season breaks from previous ones, where the supposed killer often turned out to be a red herring. Instead, the finale dives deep into Rex’s backstory, showing how he became a cunning killer, responsible not only for Sazz’s death but also for Glen’s.
Rex was raised as a hunter and dreamed of being a writer. After a disastrous start in Hollywood, he became Sazz’s stuntman protégé. Sazz wanted to write a screenplay based on Charles’s murder-solving adventures and trusted Rex to help her.
But when he read her script, jealousy consumed him, leading him to steal her work and pass it off as his own under the pseudonym Marshall P. Pope. When Sazz found out, she confronted him, and Rex decided he couldn’t let her ruin his plans.
He killed her using a sniper rifle and quickly disposed of her body. In the finale, Rex, feeling cornered, takes Mabel hostage. However, a surprise twist occurs when Jan, living secretly in Charles’s walls, saves the day with her own sniper rifle.
Showrunner Explained Shocking Killer Reveal
In the Season 4 finale Episode 9, showrunner John Hoffman explained the fate of Marshall, who was revealed as Sazz’s murderer earlier in the season. Marshall’s backstory reveals a complex character shaped by feelings of betrayal and a strong need for approval in the film industry.
Even though Sazz tried to guide him and support his writing, Marshall gives in to jealousy and ends up killing her. In an interview with The Wrap, Hoffman described him as a tragic character—flawed but influenced by his upbringing. Sazz’s belief in him makes his betrayal even more painful.
Then there’s Jan, who’s been waiting to get revenge for Sazz’s death. Their confrontation in the finale is intense and brings Marshall’s story to a dramatic close. Hoffman stated how well Jin played Marshall, saying, “Jin is beautiful in that whole trajectory. What an actor.”
As for Jan, her quest for vengeance feels fitting, especially given her relationship with Sazz. Hoffman added that he’d love to bring Jin back in some way, but he recognized that Marshall’s actions led to a necessary conclusion.
