Oscar Nominee Austin Butler Claims Elvis Accent Damaged His Vocal Chords: “One song took 40 takes”
Actor Austin Butler is finally planning on getting rid of his Elvis Presley accent. He played the role of the legendary singer in Presley’s 2022 biopic, directed by Baz Luhrmann. After the film’s release, Butler continued to speak like Presley in press events, and award ceremonies claiming that he is not faking it and that is his genuine accent.
He once explained that he was so dedicated to the role that he worked hard for three years. Over the course of three years, the actor apparently adopted Presley’s accent. He was mercilessly trolled on social media but now it seems like he is done with that phase.

Actor Austin Butler played the role of singer Elvis Presley in the 2022 biopic, Elvis, directed by Baz Luhrmann. The actor spent so much time perfecting Presley’s voice that now he can’t seem to shake it off. He has continued to speak like the singer publicly even 8 months after the film’s release in June. He once talked about his accent claiming that it is genuine,
“I don’t think I sound like [Presley] still, but I guess I must because I hear it a lot. I had three years where that was my only focus. So, I’m sure there’s pieces of him in my DNA and I’ll always be linked.”
The actor was trolled on social media as thousands of jokes about his accent flooded the internet but the actor has always claimed that it is real.
The actor is finally getting rid of the accent
Roughly 8 months after the film’s release, the actor is finally getting rid of the accent claiming that it may have damaged his vocal cords. He said on The Graham Norton Show on Friday,
“I am getting rid of the accent, but I have probably damaged my vocal cords with all that singing. One song took 40 takes!”
The actor recently got the 2023 Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture — Drama and he gave a speech using the accent that he apparently adopted in just three years.
Austin Butler’s voice coach claimed that he is not faking it
Shortly after the actor gave his speech at the Golden Globe Awards, his voice coach claimed that he was not faking it and that is his actual accent, which may last “forever,”
“What you saw in that Golden Globes speech, that’s him. It’s genuine, it’s not put on. I feel sorry people are saying that, you know, it’s still acting, [but] he’s actually taken [Presley’s voice] on board.”
During the COVID lockdown, the actor worked hard to master Elvis Presley’s voice and it may take some time for him to get rid of it.
Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis is now streaming on HBO Max.
