Oscars 2024: Not Robert De Niro, Only 1 Actor Comes Close to Beating Robert Downey Jr’s Oppenheimer Performance
The Best Supporting Actor award at Oscars 2024 is being considered the most competitive category. There were several excellent performances with the favourites being Robert Downey Jr. for his role in Oppenheimer and Robert De Niro for his role in Killers of the Flower Moon.
It is worth noting that De Niro’s role is being hailed as the best supporting role of the year by many however, there is one actor that comes close to beating Downey Jr. in the Oscars.
Who can beat Robert Downey Jr. for the Best Supporting Actor award at Oscars 2024?
One name that we feel is being overlooked for the best supporting role this year is Ryan Gosling for his role in Barbie. Gosling added a lot to Barbie’s success and perfectly brought all aspects of Ken’s personality on the big screen.
Interestingly, this would prove to be Ryan Gosling’s third Oscars nomination, however, the first in the supporting category. Previously, Gosling was nominated for Half Nelson in 2007 and for La La Land in 2017 in the best actor category.
However, beating Robert Downey Jr. for his performance in Oppenheimer won’t be easy at all. By playing Lewis Strauss in the movie, it can be argued that he delivered his best performance in about 15 years. That said, it will be interesting to see if Ryan Gosling can beat Robert De Niro and win the Oscars for best supporting actor or not. The Oscars are scheduled to take place on March 11, 2024.
Robert De Niro speaks bout his character William Hale
In the movie Killers of the Flower Moon, Robert De Niro is playing the role of William Hale. He is a prominent landowner on the Osage Indian Reservation who makes sure to gain the trust of the Osage community before orchestrating a series of murders.
While speaking about his character during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, Robert De Niro stated via EW:
“I don’t understand a lot about him. But people do things. He has to be charming, he has to win people over. Part of him is sincere. It’s just that other part where he’s betraying the Osage community. There’s a feeling of entitlement. I guess you could say we became a lot more aware of it after George Floyd, with systemic racism.”
Robert De Niro was certainly able to add life to the character. Watching him alongside Leonardo Di Caprio was a treat to watch and it’s safe to say that he deserves every bit of the praise he has gotten for the role.
