SPOILERS AHEAD

Developed by Ronald D. Moore, the historical drama series Outlander is based on the novel by Diana Gabaldon of the same name. The first season premiered in 2014, and the show is currently in its seventh season, which is based on the An Echo in the Bone book of the Outlander series. The seventh book is centered on the time traveling of a 20th-century doctor and her 18th-century Scottish Highlander warrior husband.

Upon release, the season received a positive response from the critics and held a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The seventh season was split into two parts, with eight episodes premiering in June 2023 and the other eight in November 2024, which will conclude on 17th January 2025. Reportedly, Outlander will conclude with its eighth season, but the story will continue with a scheduled spin-off. Fans are, however, puzzled by one mystery on the show that occurred back in Season 4.

Fans wonder if Brianna could travel while being pregnant on Outlander

Actress Sophie Skelton plays Brianna Randall Fraser on Outlander. She is the daughter of 20th-century doctor Claire Randall and her 18th-century Scottish Highlander warrior husband, Jamie Fraser. She was conceived in the 18th century and born in the 20th century.

In the season four-finale episode Man of Worth, the audience saw Brianna’s character give birth to a baby boy on her great-aunt’s North Carolina plantation. However, fans are wondering about one particular scene where Claire is telling Jamie that Bree cannot travel in time because she is pregnant. A Reddit user pointed out that Claire Randall time-traveled when she was pregnant with Brianna in season two, so why can’t her daughter do the same thing?

A user explained that Brianna might be able to time travel while pregnant, but once the child is born, there is a teeny tiny possibility that she cannot take the child with her. This is because it has not been established if the child can time-travel just like her.

In a scene from the episode, where Claire is telling Roger that Brianna cannot travel, the user explained that she is specifically talking about the child after it’s born. They mentioned that by the time they’d reach where Brianna was, the child would have been born. Another user noted that everyone cannot travel; Claire got lucky, and Bree could travel, so they were fine doing it, but what if Brianna’s baby couldn’t travel?

Catríona Balfe, who plays Claire Randall, noted during the scene that Bree would have been able to travel early in her pregnancy, but it’s late, and there is nothing that they could do. Claire also explains to Roger that there is also a possibility that the child might not be his.

Sophie Skelton talks about nailing the birth-giving scene in Outlander’s finale scene

In her conversation with TV Line, actress Sophie Skelton addressed her birth-giving scene for the finale episode of season 4. Her character Brianna gives birth to a baby boy after she got pregnant accidentally, and the actress explains,

I’ve never been in a birth apart from my own, obviously, but I don’t remember that, thankfully. So I wanted to see what kind of sounds women make. Sometimes in film, it looks like they’re screaming…actually, they make a low, animalistic sound.

She describes further that it’s quite awful to hear that. The actress recalled that on the day of her filming, she worked on her legwork for the birthing scene, which impressed the director and the assistant director. Skelton noted that it was fun to film it with a lot of sweating, screaming, and a very red face.

After a crew member appreciated her for the way she acted in the scene, which made them think that she had gone through the process in real life, the actress simply said, ‘I’m a professional fake-birth-giver now.’

Sadly, Claire and Jamie weren’t present at the time of Brianna’s baby boy Jemmy’s birth. In an interview with EW, Skelton explained that the Fraser family does have a moment after her character comes out with the baby and pointed out that the Frasers are there to support each other.

In future seasons it was revealed that Roger was indeed the biological father of Jemmy, despite Brianna being s**ually assaulted by Stephen Bonnet.

Outlander is available to watch on STARZ.
