2023 seems to be the year for Irish actors with the likes of Paul Mescal, Andrew Scott, Barry Keoghan, Saoirse Ronan, Cillian Murphy, and Michael Fassbender taking over the spotlight- effortlessly so. Mescal and Scott share the stage as they star as partners in the upcoming romantic fantasy All of Us Strangers, the second film adaptation of the 1987 novel Strangers by Taichi Yamada.

Paul Mescal’s rise to fame in the Hollywood entertainment industry has been nothing short of dramatic. His first role in a television series, an adaptation of Sally Rooney’s best-selling novel Normal People, catapulted him into the limelight. It has been quite a journey ever since. So far, the roles he has played have been serious and even intense at times. However, he is not opposed to taking on a role that is a little light.

Paul Mescal Would Like to Star in A Rom-Com alongside Ayo Edebiri

Paul Mescal won hearts by portraying the hesitant and emotionally unavailable teenage student Connell Waldron in Normal People. He went on to play other roles that were even more serious than this one as he appeared as a sexual assault convict in God’s Creatures, a troubled young father in Aftersun, and now a mysterious guy named Harry opposite Fleabag fame Andrew Scott’s Adam in the upcoming movie All of Us Strangers.

Although all of his work has been critically acclaimed and no one is complaining about it (yet), it would be refreshing to see Mescal in a role that is a little less demanding and a little more light-hearted. As it turns out the actor’s opinions are quite similar as he is quite willing to star in a rom-com now.

In an interview with Awards Watch, when asked about his thoughts on starring in a comedy, Mescal said:

“Comedy scares me deeply because I think I saw Bottoms recently and I was in awe of how they do that. That’s one of those I leave the cinema and I’m incredibly jealous and brightened of everybody’s talents involved with that film. But I think in the next five years I’m going to set myself a challenge to do maybe like a rom-com with Ayo (Edebiri) or something like that would be cool.”

Thus far, Mescal’s performances have been quite monotonous but captivating nonetheless so it can be expected that he will give a good performance in a comedy or rom-com too. Ayo Edebiri is not opposed to starring opposite the actor in a rom-com.

While on the topic of rising stars, it would be unfair and impossible to not bring up Ayo Edebiri who began her career as a comedian and is no less than a Hollywood star right now. With her diverse roles in the high-school drama Bottoms, Seth Rogen’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, and the mockumentary Theatre Camp, the actress has proved her range.

When asked if she is willing to star in a rom-com with Paul Mescal, Ayo Edebiri affirmed that she is. She told Awards Watch:

“Paul and I have spoken about it since because I told Paul he is very chaotic. [laughs] Honestly he’s one of my favorite actors to watch, period. I actually said, “So, is someone writing a script for us now, or what?” So that’s my answer, if somebody writes us a good script.”

Edebiri went on to say that she loves Paul Mescal’s work and would love to see him try his hand at comedy. She even has an idea for the type of script that would suit the Oscar nominee.
