The fallout from comedian Jo Koy’s hosting of the 81st Golden Globes Awards ceremony has become the focal point of post-show discussions, with criticism directed at his opening monologue. When Jo Koy took the stage to kick off the prestigious awards ceremony, it became evident that the comedic tone he was attempting to set wasn’t resonating as expected.

Koy’s Golden Globes humor, touching on Meryl Streep, Ryan Gosling, Succession, Oppenheimer, and Harry & Meghan, garnered mixed viewer reactions. Some saw him as a misfit, while others acknowledged a few successful jokes despite an overall miss. In an attempt to salvage the situation, Jo Koy shifted the blame onto his writers for the monologue mishap, suggesting that the material provided to him contributed to the lackluster performance.  Koy told GMA3,

“I got the gig 10 days ago! You want a perfect monologue? Some I wrote, some other people wrote. I wrote some of these, and those are the ones you’re laughing at.”

However, this move did little to mitigate the damage to Koy’s reputation, as critics and disappointed viewers continued to hold him accountable for the lack of entertainment value during a key moment of the awards ceremony. The aftermath of this controversial hosting gig has led to uncertainty about Jo Koy hosting another award show in the future.

As the People’s Choice Awards announced Simu Liu, known for his role as one of the Kens in Barbie, as the host for the upcoming event, the decision raised eyebrows. Despite the recent controversy surrounding the Golden Globes’ host debacle, the PCA seemed to overlook the opportunity to address and rectify the imbalance.

Simu Liu, not a newcomer to hosting, previously showcased his skills as the host of Character Media’s Unforgettable Gala in December. His nomination for a People’s Choice Award for his role in Barbie added another layer of anticipation to his hosting responsibilities. While some express confidence in Liu’s ability to carry the event smoothly, lingering concerns persist, particularly in the wake of Jo Koy’s hosting missteps at the Golden Globes.

Nevertheless, Simu Liu conveyed his excitement about the upcoming opportunity, expressing his eagerness to take on the hosting duties. Liu told (via Variety),

“I’m so grateful to have been asked to step up to the hosting plate for the 2024 ‘People’s Choice Awards. It’s exciting to celebrate this incredible year in pop culture, and to do so with the incredible fans that make what we do possible.”

Jen Neal, the executive vice president of live events and specials at NBC Universal, echoed this sentiment, expressing delight in having Liu as the host for the 2024 People’s Choice Awards. The event is set to take place at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, with the two-hour telecast scheduled to air live on NBC, Peacock, and E! on February 18th.
