Casting plays a major role in the success or failure of any film or TV show, as the actors define how the audiences will connect with the characters. Some characters become evergreen when the casting is done right, and such has been the case for the Harry Potter film franchise.

It is hard to imagine anyone else playing Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley other than Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. However, the studio has already announced an open casting call for these roles in the upcoming Harry Potter reboot series. And just like them, the cast of Lord Voldemort is still uncertain.

Although there has been no announcement from the studio or producers yet, fans have already been casting their favorites for the role of the Dark Lord. And out of some fancasts that include the likes of Benedict Cumberbatch, Cillian Murphy has been the most popular so far.

In the movies, Ralph Fiennes made the role of Voldemort evergreen with his serpentine and terrifying portrayal. Now, many potterheads believe that Cillian Murphy could also bring that chilling energy with him. As rumors of Murphy’s Voldemort are getting stronger, netizens took to their social media to express their opinions.

Murphy has already done negative characters that were complex and creepy. For example, Scarecrow in Batman Begins showed how he can be a quiet menace. He can possibly bring the same energy to show Voldemort’s insecurities and ambitions.

Murphy as Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders showed how he can be a cool and calculative person who is aware of an underlying danger. These qualities reflect much of Voldemort’s character, who is aware of the danger of Potter.

Besides all these, Murphy has the looks too. His cold blue eyes and sharp facial features will just need pale makeup to embody the Dark Lord. While Fiennes showed the fierce and aggressive side of Voldemort, Murphy could explore the manipulative and insecure side of his personality, which will be a fresh take on the character.

Unexplored Side of Voldemort That Needs to Be Told

One thing that the Harry Potter reboot series will allow is to dive deeper into each character’s story, which was not possible earlier due to movie constraints. The original films had to cut a lot of Voldemort’s backstory to fit within time.

The movies mentioned how Voldemort almost died after he tried to kill Harry Potter and showed how he was resurrected back to his form in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. However, it couldn’t show his journey from a troubled child to the dark wizard.

The series could explore Tom Riddle’s early life in the orphanage, how he discovered his magical abilities, and how he used them to manipulate others. The books mention how cruel he was even as a child and how emotional negligence and isolation made him insane.

The story of his family can also show his ego and insanity for pure blood magic. Riddle’s grandfather was a pure-blood supremacist, and his mother bewitched his Muggle father. This bizarre backstory would help the audience connect more to the character.

His time in Hogwarts and his relationship with Dumbledore have also been shown in bits and pieces in the movies. A proper timeline for his interactions with characters like Horace Slughorn, Dumbledore, and others in Hogwarts will show how his search for immortality began and how he actually created the Horcruxes.

Moreover, the movies didn’t show anything about the First Wizarding War. A detailed exploration of that will also show how he terrified the wizarding world, who fought against him, and how he managed to create a team of loyal Death Eaters for him. Hopefully, the Potterheads will get to see these untold stories in the upcoming portrayal of Lord Voldemort.

The Harry Potter reboot series is scheduled to premiere in 2026 on HBO and Max.
