  • Gemma Arterton sparked online reactions by opposing the idea of a female James Bond.

  • Daniel Craig revealed he avoided roles like the portrayal of a gay character in 'Queer' during his Bond era.

In the world of entertainment, some roles and character representations go beyond the screen. They become cultural icons. There is no better example of this than James Bond– a character so deeply rooted in global pop culture for decades that it becomes difficult to imagine a complete changeover for the part.

When Daniel Craig took on the role of Bond, he brought his own touch. His gritty, complex, and sometimes vulnerable acting added more nuances that made 007 more than just a sophisticated spy. However, after he left, discussions regarding the next Bond began, and a former Bond girl fueled them further with her remarks on the character’s gender.

More than a successful espionage film franchise, James Bond has become a brand. The franchise began in 1962 and is now known everywhere in the world. It has produced 25 movies, which have earned billions and created a legacy. Daniel Craig was the 6th actor to take on the mantle of 007.

Recently, Gemma Arterton, who played the role of Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace gave her honest opinion when asked about the possibility of a female James Bond in the future. In an interview with The Times, she said,

Isn’t a female James Bond like Mary Poppins being played by a man? They talk about it, but I think people would find it too outrageous. Sometimes you just have to respect the tradition.

Her comments opened a wave of fan reactions online, as many of them feel the actress is right.

Producer Barbara Broccoli earlier told The Hollywood Reporter, “I don’t think a woman should play James Bond.” Other actresses, like Jenna Ortega in her MTV interview and Ana de Armas in an interview with The Sun, also disagreed with the idea of a female Bond.

From Arterton’s viewpoint, it is clear that some things should not be changed or messed with. Her direct comparison with a male Mary Poppins shows how ridiculous she felt the idea of changing an iconic figure.

Daniel Craig Couldn’t Play Gay Roles During His Bond Era

Daniel Craig’s filmography after the Bond franchise has been completely different. His latest role in Queer is quite the opposite of his previous performances. Recently in an interview with The Times, Craig talked about why he couldn’t play some roles during his Bond era.

Craig plays the role of William Lee in Queer, who is a gay man living illegally in Mexico in the 1950s. Talking about his choice, Craig said,

I couldn’t have done this while doing Bond… It would look reactionary, like I was showing my range. Early on with Bond I thought I had to do other work, but I didn’t.

When asked if playing a gay man while being the face of Bond would become a statement of masculinity, Craig replied,

It’s just not a conversation I wanted. I had it all the way through Bond anyway. Could there be ‘this’ Bond? ‘That’ Bond? So anything that is going to inflame that conversation? No — life’s too short.

Moreover, Craig doesn’t look at his role as a statement of LGBTQ+ representation. He doesn’t feel it is his “place” being a straight actor. The actor purely loved his character’s story and felt the urge to portray it on screen. As far as the next Bond is concerned, only time will tell if the tradition will break or not.

All James Bond movies are available to stream on Prime Video.

Queer is now playing in theaters.
