Alien: Romulus comes seven years after the release of the movie Alien: Covenant, directed by Ridley Scott. While Scott is not directing the new movie, he is involved in its production with Fede Álvarez helming it as the director. The screenplay is from Álvarez and his frequent writing collaborator Rodo Sayagues.

Although it is the first time Álvarez is directing an Alien movie, he is not a stranger to the genre as he has directed horror movies like 2013’s Evil Dead and 2016’s Don’t Breathe. In fact, the trailer for Alien: Romulus looks quite promising and even includes a glimpse of that one disturbing signature chestburster scene that fans eagerly wait for.

Speaking about that scene in the movie with Total Film for its upcoming issue, Álvarez revealed that the inspiration for it came from David Attenborough’s nature documentaries.

It is done almost like a nature documentary. While we were seeing it on set we were joking, [like] ‘The creature is coming out slow. It’s looking for the scent of the mother…’ The creature’s not trying to be scary. The creature is trying to get the f*ck out of that cocoon, that happens to be a person.

The Uruguayan filmmaker claimed that this seems more realistic in a way. He also mentioned that despite this take on the scene, the original design remains intact.

What Is The Chestburster Scene in Alien: Romulus All About?

The director’s words probably imply that much like in the other films, the chestburster is going to come out and wiggle around. However, this time, the audience will also see it emerging out of the person’s body.

In the said scene in the trailer, a character feels something inside of her and illuminates a light at her chest. A xenomorph chestburster can be seen trying to break through. The thumping combined with her loud heartbeat is enough to cause goosebumps for the viewers.

The movie stars Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, and Aileen Wu. It follows Spaeny’s Rain Carradine leading a group of young space volunteers on a scavenging mission. Things take a turn for the worse when they stumble upon the most horrifying creatures in space.

Alien: Romulus will be out in theaters on August 16, 2024.
