Renfield Star Nicholas Hoult Made Career Blunder after Tom Cruise’s $1.49B ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Rejected Him
The English actor Nicholas Hoult is currently starring alongside Nicolas Cage in Renfield. Rejections always hurt, but it hurts even more when you know they could have given your career a boost. In an interview, the actor revealed that he got rejected from two blockbusters and had to turn down another great hit of the year because of some prior commitments.
Hoult had done something only a few could think of. He rejected the offer from Tom Cruise to work alongside him in the Mission Impossible franchise. Hoult auditioned for Top Gun: Maverick but, unfortunately, couldn’t be a part of it. The movie turned out to be a massive hit and grossed $1.49 billion worldwide.
Why did Nicholas Hoult turn down Tom Cruise’s offer?
Nicholas Hoult could have been a part of the top-grossing movie of all time, Top Gun: Maverick but unfortunately, the Skins star couldn’t get it. Not just this, the actor was rejected twice in a row, as he also auditioned for The Batman, but got rejected there as well. During an interview with a news portal, Hoult revealed,
“I screen-tested for ‘The Batman’ and didn’t get it. Screen-tested for ‘Top Gun,’ didn’t get it.”

Though Hoult couldn’t make it to these films, he received an even better offer from action superstar Tom Cruise. The Menu actor shared that Cruise personally called him to be a part of the Mission Impossible franchise. Hoult accepted the role, and reportedly the role he was offered had a significant impact on the movie, as it was the finale’s main villain. But due to some prior commitments, the actor had to turn down the role. The actor said,
“I got the call from Tom Cruise: ‘Hey, how about Mission Impossible?’ OK. Got it. Then I had to drop out because I was already attached to do some more of The Great.”
Hoult couldn’t proceed with the film as he had a contractual obligation with his Hulu series The Great. The decision to turn down Cruise’s offer wouldn’t have been as harrowing if Hoult hadn’t been rejected for two major roles consecutively. But if Tom Cruise considered Hoult, there must be something he saw in the actor.
Nicholas Hoult’s latest endeavors
After turning down Mission Impossible, Hoult completed the comedy-drama series The Great. In the series, Hoult can be seen alongside Elle Fanning, and both of them earned Emmy nominations for their performances in the series. The actor has shown versatility throughout his acting career and now he seeks to explore other genres as well. In an interview with the outlet, Hoult said,
“I would like to go do a romcom, though maybe not as a romantic lead: it sounds like there’s slightly less to explore with those characters. But maybe people just don’t think of me like that, maybe I don’t get sent the good ones. I’d love to pretend it’s all my doing, but it’s more about when things align and when directors cast you.”
Currently, the actor is starring in Renfiled which is an American horror comedy. Renfiled marked its release on April 14, 2023.
