The latest edition of Primetime Emmy Awards recognized several works. Although Shōgun came out victorious with an impressive count of 18 Emmy wins. Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer also shone through. The highly popular but contentious TV hit won a total of four Emmy Awards at the 2024 ceremony.

The British black comedy-drama television miniseries, Baby Reindeer, is undoubtedly the best from Gadd and he is amply delighted about it. In his winning speech, he said (via Variety):

The only constant across any success in television is good storytelling, good storytelling that speaks to our times. So take risks, push boundaries, explore the uncomfortable, dare to fail in order to achieve.

Before winning his first Emmy, Gadd has been a part of many wonderful movies and shows too. From playing the role of Duff in Outlander to having critical contributions in works like Against The Law, Wedding Season, Scot Squad, and Tripped, he has been through a journey worth remembering.

The 2024 award-winning miniseries, Baby Reindeer, is adapted from Gadd’s autobiographical one-man show. The drama is written and created by Richard Gadd himself, with him in the lead role (Donny) as well. It is directed by Weronika Tofilska and Josephine Bornebusch and also features actors like Jessica Gunning, Nava Mau, and Tom Goodman-Hill.

The drama has a total of 7 episodes. It gathered a strong viewership and critical acknowledgment. What’s more interesting to know is Baby Reindeer is based on the real-life stalking and harassment that Richard Gadd experienced. The stalker, a woman, is portrayed as Martha in the show, played by Gunning, to protect her real identity.

According to Variety, a Scottish woman named Fiona Harvey publicly claimed that she was the real-life Martha who inspired the show. She filed a lawsuit against Netflix in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California. She has alleged defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, and violations of her right to publicity. She has even demanded at least $170 million in damages.

Apart from the stalker’s real identity, some other details have been changed too for television production, such as incidents, characters, location, and other such things. Gadd himself urged people to not overthink about who the characters in the real world are, as that’s not the real point of the show.

Baby Reindeer is available for streaming on Netflix.
