Celebrated director Ridley Scott, the maker of one of the successful historical epic movies, Gladiator has finally opened up about his upcoming thrilling sequel to the movie. This time the project focuses on Oscar winner Denzel Washington whose role will be of the slave.

Some gladiators were forced to fight in the coliseum and had an opportunity to win their freedom through successful bloodshed and victories in the game. Washington will be one of them. In an interview with Total Film Magazine via GamesRadar Ridley Scott said:

“As for Denzel’s character. There were businesses of gladiators who could earn their freedom if they stayed alive. That was the deal, so we went right into that, in-depth. Where did he come from? How was he taken? He was branded with marks and registered with a brand on his chest as a slave. So that’s how he comes into the story.”

Denzel Washinton’s character in the sequel is portrayed as a financially successful man who still harbors discontentment and bitterness toward those who had enslaved him. So, the character will showcase the bitterness of Washinnton’s character toward his former captors.

The upcoming sequel will focus on Commodus’ nephew whom Russell Crowe‘s character saves in the original film. Furthermore, Pedro Pascal and Barry Keoghan will also star alongside Denzel Washington in Scott’s movie.

Ridley Scott did not go deep into exposing the plot of his upcoming sequel, but what he confirmed is that Gladiator 2 would focus on Lucius’ journey as a mature individual and set years after the events of the original installment.

The original Gladiator saw the end of Maximus in a fight with Joaquin Phoenix’s character Commodus to liberate  Lucilla and Lucius, so some of the actors from Scott’s previous movie will reprise their roles in the next Gladiator including Connie Nielsen‘s Lucilla and Derek Jacobi’s Gracchus.

However, the sequel will also focus on rising stars like Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, and other talented actors. The Equalizer star’s appearance in Gladiator 2 will mark a reunion between him and Ridley Scott, as the two worked together in American Gangster.

The first Gladiator was a massive commercial and critical success and was the second highest-grossing film of that year behind Tom Cruise‘s movie. Ridley Scott’s work received extensive recognition during the 73rd Academy Awards, where it won Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe as the enslaved gladiator, Maximus.
